Suspects flee pool crash in underwear

A car chase came to a wet end in Richfield early Tuesday morning after a car crashed into a children's pool. But that's not the end of the story--Police tell 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the male suspects ended up in their underwear and then wearing women's clothes before being arrested.

It all started when police tried to pull over a vehicle early Tuesday. When the vehicle did not stop, a chase ensued. The chase ended around 7:15 a.m. near the intersection of 66th and Portland Aves. S. when a car went barreling through a fence at the Richfield Outdoor Pool. The car ended up in the kiddie pool. No children were in the pool at the time.

The pool water soaked the suspects, police reported. So, they ran to a nearby home in their underwear.

"They were running for their lives, and taking their clothes off," one witness said.

They kicked in the door at the home and took the homeowner hostage for 45 minutes, according to police.

The homeowner was too terrified to talk on camera to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, but she said the suspects called friends to pick them up, and then ran off wearing women's clothing.

While they were running off, one of the suspects got stock in the mud in a nearby pond, according to police. It was just enough time for police to catch up with them.

Police say everyone was very lucky that nobody was in the pool when the car came roaring through the fence.

"At the speed that car was traveling...there's no way that anyone would've been able to react," said Lt. Todd Sandell, of the Richfield Police Department.
