It does sound pretty ridiculous. But consider, the commander is also trying to keep his troops there, when there may not be a reason to have an army anymore. So when there's no more law, cops, courts, prisons, soldiers may think getting a wife from one of the last remaining females on earth might be a good idea. Or maybe not.
It's a wacky situation, but besides being unethical, how realistic it was didn't bother me that much.
