Books by Harold Schecter are a good start. He's written solid bios on Ed Gein (DEVIANT) and Albert Fish (DERANGED) to name a couple. Also THE A-Z ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SERIAL KILLERS (co-written by former FANGORIA editor David Everitt) and THE SERIAL KILLER FILES are compelling if disturbing reading.
True Crime section at a decent bookstore or Big Box (Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million) should have these and others.

Good luck-it is a fascinating subject.
