A turn-of-the-century detective is sent to a countryside Dutch settlement in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow to use new forensic techniques to unravel the murders said to have been committed by a headless horseman.

The gloomy, foggy, creepy cinematography, sets and atmosphere are excellent. Depp does a convincing and entertaining job at this alternate re-imaging of Ichabod Crane, and new take at the nature of the horseman.

The romance between Depp and Katrina Van Tess (Christina Ricci) is disappointingly dry and underdeveloped, and much worse the development of characters played by a talented cast. The plot of the story is rushed at the end, thus becoming convoluted and seemingly an afterthought rather than a driving force; same the fate of Ichabod's forensics.

There's some nifty fight scenes and Depp humor, but despite the ample dark atmosphere, the film lacks scares and but a few moments of well built suspense.

I agree completely.
It’s imagery, over the top gore, and fresh take on the old story are great. But several of the subplots ( the romance, conspiracy, and Ichabod’s childhood ) come off as forced filler, merely there to pad the run time and to break up scenes with the Horseman. Still, fun popcorn entertainment though, from back when Burton and Depp still had passion.

Synopsis:Michael is your typical teenage slacker with a bad knee, who has a crush on the girl next door, an absentee Dad, and who loves vidja games and horror flicks. The latter fascination leads to getting his hands on the latest in interactive terror, Brainscan, which claims to be the most extreme and realistic game ever. Only, it’s a little too real, and now Michael is in over his head when he wakes up to find a grisly trophy in his fridge, the news talking about a local murder, and the game’s sinister mascot ( the Trickster ) appears in the real world, promising to make everything okay, if he just keeps playing the game.

Ah yes, that magical period in the 90s when holier than thou, moral douchbags blamed society’s problems and the breakdown of the american family on everything from music, to movies, comic books, cartoons, and ( especially ) violent video games.

This film takes the simple premise of the MTV and slasher flick obsessed youth, and runs with the idea of them being corrupted or brainwashed by “ evil media “ and despite the attempts at tension and disturbing subject matter, still mostly comes across as satire of conservative parents worst fears. Overall, there’s not much horror here. The characters are pretty generic, and a young Edward Furlong manages to be simultaneously underwhelming and unsympathetic as the aforementioned Michael. The supporting cast, including the usually fantastic Frank Langella as a detective, are all cookie cutter and forgettable. There are few narrative shocks or surprises here you won’t be able to figure out on your own days before the reveal, outside of the mystery of how Michael manages to elude discovery in spite of the fact that he goes through the movie being a whiny, self incriminating, dumbass who’s barely capable of secreting a full sentence out of the lowest hole in his face without sputtering and gibbering like a pre pubescent Jeff Goldblum.

There are two things that keep this movie from falling into the shitty category. The story is interesting enough in premise and moves along well enough to make you want to stick around to see where it’s going, and then there’s the Trickster. This guy is like Drop Dead Fred mixed with the Djinn from Wishmaster. He’s maniacal, animated, twisted, and entertaining as hell to watch. He makes the whole thing worth it, and alone is worth checking it out for. Overall, this movie is very much a product of the time it came out, and is a nice little stab at social commentary for the current state of affairs at the time of its conception, nothing groundbreaking here, but worth a watch if it pops up on a Netflix or you’re looking for something a little different from standard 90s slasher fare.
