I'm a huge Godzilla fan: curious, how many of you consider the Godzilla franchise to be horror?

Generally speaking, I put all Godzilla movies under the wide category of Horror, as they are technically 'monster movies'. They sometimes were played on Horror TV programs like Monstrous Movies, Creature Feature, etc.
Some Godzilla films have horror, sci-fi, fantasy, some were campy for kids, most a mix of genres. There's a wide variety. Last edited by Sculpt; 02-07-2021 at 08:11 AM. |

Sometime after our talk in the movie collection game thread I decided that I should rectify the fact that I did not own many Godzilla films. At the time, I only had the 98 version of Godzilla, which many disregard, King of Monsters which is often excluded from the films, and King Kong Versus Godzilla. I have since purchased a triple pack with Godzilla Versus Mothra: Battle for Earth, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, and Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. I also acquired the DVD Criterion Collection copy of Godzilla which included both Gojira and Godzilla: King of Monsters. In addition I purchased both Godzilla Versus Hedorah (The Smog Monster) and Godzilla Versus Gigan. While I was at it I purchased the Legacy Collection of Gamera for $9 which, I believe, included all but the most recent Gamera film. I plan to continue to expand my collection of Godzilla films in the near future. At the top of my list are Godzilla Versus Megalon, Godzilla Final Wars, the Godzilla Collection (which includes many of the films you recommended, though most are already on Netflix), and Godzilla Versus Spacegodzilla/Godzilla Versus Destroyah (it is a double feature pack). They are in no particular order. You gave an interesting list of that section of Godzilla films.

Love to hear what you think of the films after you watch each one (specifically those you haven't seen, or not seen in a very long time).
I think there are a couple of the 2000s I haven't seen, but I get some of them mixed up (which i think is unfortunately easy to do). I recently saw Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack in it's entirety (review). I wasn't very impressed. Godzilla Final Wars is really best for those who have seen (nearly) all of the Showa series films (also Toho films Gorath and Atragon). |

I only ever saw two Godzilla movies: Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla (the one with the scientists who turned into monkeys) and the movie where Godzilla, Mothra, and another monster were fighting King Ghidorah.
I was never a big fan of those movies, but I did used to like The Return of Mothra movies that would come on the Scifi Channel. In those movies Mothra was a good guy defending the human race from giant monsters and aided by tiny singing Japanese women who I'm guessing were supposed to be like fairies (or something). |

While Showa is my favorite series, Godzilla vs Biollante is my favorite G movie of them all.
I know G vs The Sea Monster and Son of G are not well loved, those two are among my top favorite as well. Godzilla vs The Sea Monster was the first movie I bought on my own, at K-Mart, when I was 9. |

Sea Monster and Son are campy fun. The budget was quite low for Sea, and that showed. The original story had King Kong in it, but was picked up by Toho who replaced it with Godzilla. |
