I was suprised no one mentioned the DKs or Discharge. Really cool pioneering bands of the genre.

I WAS leaving. Not now. I changed my mind because I hadn't gone back to work yet when I had hoped. I'm back at work now....I think. Not sure.

I haven't heard much of Discharge. As for DK, I've got a lot of respect for them, but I think that in some ways their music is very dated. Reading the lyrics is like reading some 80s-era anarchist tract. On top of this, I don't really agree with their politics. When I was younger, I could totally get behind it... like "Yeah! Fuck the system! Crush capitalism!" As I've gotten older though, I've realized that things aren't so black and white. The people that decry the government so loudly are often doing so to achieve their own selfish ends. I've got the same problem with bands like Crass, Conflict, etc.

1. The Misfits. No explanation needed here.
2. The Ramones. None here either.
3. TSOL. "Code Blue." Enough said.
4. The Buzzcocks. Pop-punk may very well not exist if it wasn't for these guys. Awesome.
5. The Germs. Amateurish instrumentation and a drug-addled singer. It's what punk is all about! Seriously though, Darby Crash was a brilliant lyricist. Many of his lyrics wouldn't be out of place in an anthology of symbolist poetry.
6. X. Invented rockabilly/punk crossover. Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake are some of the best musicians to play in punk rock. Warning: as good as early X is, everything after Under the Big Black Sun is complete and total shit.
7. The Damned. "New Rose" will go down in history as the PERFECT punk song. Hasn't been surpassed since.
8. Rudimentary Peni. The early political stuff is not that good, but after Death Church, Nick Blinko went insane and started writing all of his lyrics about Cthulhu and other assorted weirdness. Seriously, he was institutionalized for a long time.
9. Christian Death. Early punk/goth crossover. Excellent stuff, but avoid anything with Valor as the lead singer instead of Rozz Williams.
10. Wire. Punk meets art and has messy sex.

Your turn, fellow forum denizens.
so few enjoy the later Rudimentary Peni....kudos

and so few consider Christian Death punk....obviously they never took the time to listen to Theater of Pain

Pink Flag By Wire is one of the greatest albums ever

so a quick ten i guess

1. Dwarves...they basically cover my philosophy to a tee
2. Fang...hate, drugs, hate, and a little bit of horror....their lead singer went to prison for killing his girlfriend....got out and reformed the band
3. Flipper....love them or hate them....they affect you
4. Crime....greatest band to come from the bay area....period
5. Rudimentary Peni although i agree that their later stuff is much better...i do love the first three albums also
6. The Crucifucks....you can't go wrong with a name like this...and his voice....oh his voice....probably the only good band to come from Wisconson
7. Zeke....Zeke is pure punk rock fury...
8. Social Unrest this is what hardcore punk should sound like
9. The Weirdos such an overlooked band....one of the originals and one of the best
10. Descendents...what can i say....theres a softy in me

Sounds like trouble :) I fuckin' love Flipper and Crime!

I'm really into DS-13 at the moment. I've got way to many favorite punk bands... but like I said earlier on in thread Doom and Amebix are probably my favorites.
