Paraplegic In Wheelchair Killed By Train On Way To Church

Muncie, Indiana — A train struck a paraplegic in a motorized wheelchair who was on his way to church, killing him, police said.

Duane MacIntosh, 52, of Muncie, had just left one church on his way to another Sunday morning when the 38-car CSX train hit him at a crossing. A stroke and two brain surgeries paralyzed one side of MacIntosh’s body after a fall several years ago, authorities said.

MacIntosh first stopped at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

Parishioner Lynn Thornburg said he seemed to get upset during the gospel lesson and become loud. Other parishioners asked MacIntosh to wait until after the service to talk to a minister.

“That was the first time I ever saw him,” said the Rev. Dennis Goth, who was conducting the Mass at St. Lawrence. “I would have talked to the gentleman if I had a chance.”

MacIntosh left and was heading to Mount Zion Baptist Church when he was hit, police said.

Muncie police officer John Kowalski said MacIntosh tried to lift his hand to signal the train, and it appeared his chair wheel got stuck in the track at the crossing on the city’s southwest side.

The engine struck MacIntosh and the chair, throwing them into the air, with MacIntosh landing about 30 feet from the impact.

Emergency crews took MacIntosh to Ball Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:54 a.m.

“He had been in a lot of pain with his head,” said MacIntosh’s mother Olie Seals, who was being comforted by her minister, Aston Chambers of Mount Zion.
