New to AHS. Is the promo's for 1984 just for marketing?

So, I've never watched a single episode of American Horror Story. However, that all change this season as they dived in the slasher 80's genre which is one of my favorites in horror. The early promos of Camp counselors being killed off in similar ways to other slashers began to get me excited for this show. The problem is that the show doesn't seem to have that vibe at least with the color pallet and clothing. Yes, we only seen the first episode but just seems to me that the promos are for marketing purposes not for the real show. So, my question is these promos just for marketing not for the show? Is AHS know for doing this type of marketing? Thanks very much.
