So more like an early Running Man without the tv-show and the big audience?
That does sound pretty sweet. With a cool name you could turn it into a franchise. Each part set in another age or location, organised by the same family.
If I was filthy rich I'd fund it rightaway.

WONDERLAND (2003). Pretty good film about the July 1981 Wonderland murders. Good soundtrack, decent cast and very good turn by Val Kilmer as porn star John Holmes, who may have been involved in what went down (more than likely).
My copy also has a great doc called WADD that covers Holmes's life, times and films. ***1/2

I am crazy about Wonderland! It's a grimy little movie, appropriate for the subject matter. Yeah, my disc includes the Wadd doc. Terrific stuff, and at times hard to watch for all the right reasons.

Not a bad movie but nothing I could really get immersed in. Everything about this was just kind of...okay.

There was a lot about this movie I didn't like, but the main thing was Miss Peregrine and her ilk. A handful of invisible but easy to kill creatures want to kill the children. Their answer to protect the kids is to keep them reliving the same day, never aging or leaving the island, for over 70 years (and going). And if they do decide to leave, the years will catch up and they'll be old, so they're fucked. How is that a reasonable way to protect them? How is she not the villain of the tale? It baffled me.
It wasn't just to protect them from the monsters of the movie but society itself. Due to their pecularities, they weren't safe in the normal world. One could argue if what they had could really be called living or just surviving but since they weren't being held in the timeloop against their will and actually wanted to be there, i think its a stretch to call her the villain of the movie.

Damn i was hoping that one would be better then that. I'll still check it out though

So...much...crying. By the end of it I was rooting for the monster. This movie was pretty dumb. I was bored and frustrated halfway through, but I persevered, much to my detriment.

I like the relationship between the mother and daughter, especially since that was the whole point. I probably wouldn't have liked this at all if they had taken that aspect out and it was just a mother and daughter whose car breaks down and they get attacked by a monster

Solid movie. Really nice to see Iran do a horror movie, the setting of which adds a very different dynamic to the story. Some of the tension works, some of it doesn't, but story and acting were all really good.

I really liked that one too

Arrival

This was really good. The story was great. It was emotional with good characters, a grand scope and a clever original concept. The aliens were cool and i liked the reasons for them being there which set this apart from other alien movies. Amy Adams gives her best performance of her career in this. I really enjoyed this movie.

I haven't done one of these in a while, but I have a lot to say about this movie.

***Minor spoilers***

The Bye Bye Man (2017)

"Three friends stumble upon the horrific origins of the Bye Bye Man, a mysterious figure they discover is the root cause of the evil behind man's most unspeakable acts."

The Bye Bye Man actually started out pretty decent. The opening scene was alright, and there were a couple of scenes with legitimate suspense, even though the acting wasn't very good. I thought it would be a pretty good teen thriller at first. After the first act though, it devolves into the usual bad jump scares and nonsensical plot. This could have been a decent movie if they kept the simplicity of the first act and didn't try to get too loud and flashy with the scares. The editing was also some of the worst I've seen. Several scenes ended halfway through conversations or awkwardly cut away from the violence to secure a PG-13 rating which was noticeable throughout the movie. Another glaring issue was the writing. The dialog was so awful in some scenes that it killed any tension and made that scene unintentionally funny. The characters seemed to forget everything they learned about the Bye Bye Man whenever they need to use that information. One big frustration was that Elliot, the protagonist, learned that if you realize you're not afraid of the Bye Bye Man, then you take his power away (yes, it's exactly like the Babadook.) However, instead of a harrowing climax where Elliot saves his friends by showing no fear in the midst of evil, everyone is just running around screaming acting like they have no clue what to do. The vague and shoddy backstory of the spirit, which is really just a couple flashbacks to some guy in the 60's who said the name and killed a bunch of people, is never used by the characters to their advantage and just seemed like an excuse to put in a bunch of gun violence. Because that's the REAL horror! The Bye Bye Man did have glimmers of hope early on, but it's just a sloppy effort to create a boring new horror villain.

Okay I know the story needed work, even from a non-comic reader standpoint, but on its own I thought it was very well done. Some mystery, couple of fights, bit of romance that wasn't complete garbage and a female lead that wasn't useless arm candy, Tim Curry as himself. It has several good points that I don't understand how this movie had gone under my radar all my life until I caught it on tv some years ago.

I would've loved to have seen a prequel to this and this had been the sequel or something. Just so much about the Shadow's past that was very vague and went through quick. I like the whole diabolical tyrant going hero thing, but that had to be one hell of a transaction. What could they have possibly said to convince him to give up his murder habit?? And I gotta say the monk-like people who decided to train him in the first place wasn't too bright about deciding who to give knowledge of this god-like talent to. I wouldn't have been surprised if they had later asked Hitler to join the fold.
I love this old school comic movie. I even have the scary monster knife prop which is a bit horrific.
