Sorry to Grudge lovers but it just wasn't all that great.

There were some scary moments but often times its just like: "Hey, there's a girl wandering around with no jaw---isn't that crazy? That's sooo weird, isn't it? C'mon...its crazy I tell you! CRAZY!!!"

And yeah, this movie just had too much in common with the Ring, which absolutely scared the living hell outta me.

I guess in a year that didn't have much in the way of good horror....no....its still not a good movie.
But I still haven't seen "Saw" sooo.....

I dunno, I'm old, shit like "Jaws" scared me. And "Deliverance." And "The Day After."

"The Ring" was pretty goddamn scary. Even though the story is ridiculous. I mean,c'mon .....a videotape???....no one even watches VHS anymore. Ha ha ha.....but really, that's just the first problem I have with that dumb movie. But for some reason, it scared the hell outta me.
Ummm....that one sci-fi movie...."Event Horizon." I thought that was pretty fucked up too. I dunno why. Probably what was the most horrible was that kid who was about to shoot himself into space and then he woke up from his trance a few seconds before the hatch opened. I felt his panic and it freaked me out bigtime!

So there were some scary moments in "The Grudge" but it all tension induced by the sounds and atmosphere. Which is all well and good but....it just wasn't it, ya' know?

old ... i'm 43 .. i saw jaws at the theatre when it was first released .
I still have a hard time considering it a horror movie .. and certainly not Deliverance .. good movie but i didnt find it scary.
(and to be honest - i'm already on record on an older thread here saying how much i hated event horizon :)

atmosphere is 98% of a great horror movie ..
and i thought The Grudge was oozing with it .. a lot of nice effective little touches ... but thats whay i liked .. we dont all look for the same thing in films ..

but ... you still didnt answer my question re. whats been better in the last 5 years ..

I thought I did, sorry.
I'm not sure if there's really been any horror movies that've scared me with the exception of the Ring.

I've thoroughly enjoyed several others including Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later, The Devil's Backbone, the new Dawn of the Dead, Underworld and Resident Evil.
But nothing that's been, like, REALLY scary (again with the glaring exception of the Ring).
The last movie before that that I thought was freaky was "Event Horizon" and I know you hate it but damn...there was something about that movie that really screwed with me.

Again, taste being relative and all that.....
And I didn't HATE the Grudge but it didn't do it for me. Now I DID however absolutely hate Res. Evil 2, House of the Dead & House of 1000 Corpses.....
But I gotta say, even though I thought "1000 Corpses" was terrible that movie kinda fucked with me as well. Had these horrible nightmares after that one.

i thought house of 1000 corpses was the first thing to give the (origional) Texas chainsaw massacre vibe since the origional ..
i thought it was fast paced lunacy ...relentless ... pretty cool.

I thought it lacked a whole lot of humor. Then i might have liked it...:(

I thought it had plenty of humor which made the cold blooded murders all the more creepy.
It just wasn't a very well-thought out story.
I mean.....c'mon the "Fish-boy?" And "Doctor Satan???" I knew idiot stoners from high school who made up better stories than that and I'm from MISSOURI!
R. Zombie coulda really come up with something better.

But I gotta say, if the point was to make you feel queasy long after the movie ended then it did its job.

I have to also say I didn't find the Grudge at all scary or even atmospheric. Ju-On had a much better atmosphere (weird seeing it's the same director) that it American counterpart which to me at times seemed more rushed. There was no tension building, no creepiness and not one scare the entire movie.

Ju-On wasn't scary either, it was pretty creepy but not scary. As has been said already, there's not much in the way of truly scary horror movies anymore. 28 Days Later was good, had some major holes in it but was a different take on a zombie flick. Dog Soldiers rocked, wasn't scary but was creepy and eerie much more than I felt in the grudge.

Of course, the greatest horror movie of all time is The Blair Witch Project! ;)
