Controversal/Protest Tunes...

I've always dug tunes that come out as a reaction to fucked up things in society.
Music has a power to get people to sit up and take notice...

Body Count - Cop Killer

This song caused quite a stir when it came out.

What are some of your favorites?

Freedom, by Alice Cooper

Not as serious as most protest type songs, but hot damn it gets me pumped.

I like a lot of Alice's stuff in a similar vain to Freedom like School's Out and Lost in America. Fuck the Police was another great rap tune that drew a TON of attention.

Dead Kennedys: Stars & Stripes of Corruption (there's a long list of DK tunes that are really protest songs). Early U2 is very protests oriented, and so much of what was created in America in the 1960's is protest (Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, and one of my lesser known faves- Phil Ochs).

Jimi Hendix's version of the Star Spangled Banner raised some eyebrows at the time as well...

this was one from the hippy-dippy days ..

about 3 people here will remember it :

One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)
by Lambert-Potter, sung by Coven

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.

On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.

Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.

Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

I love that song, sang it all the time when I was younger and I thought everybody knew it but nobody ever seems to remember it when I bring it up.

One of my favorites. I like Masters of War by Dylan, Anarchy in the Uk and Elvis Costello's Peace, Love and Understanding.
