CasaNegra films

I was wondering if there was already a thread on this company. If not, I thought they might be of interest to the forum. Last night, I saw El Espejo de la Bruja by Chano Urueta. I recommend this cult masterwork to any Bava or Hammer aficionado, as well as to fans of Jose Mojica Marins. For the time (1960), it is graphic, shocking, well made and quite intense, other than occasional lapses into cheap effects. CasaNegra movies look like good investments for anybody interested in lush, Gothic features. Return and alky, this might be right up your respective alleys. Without giving too much away , El Espejo de La Bruja (the Witch's Mirror) combines elements of Mad Love, Atom Age Vampire and Black Sunday to startling effect.

Not familiar with them. Are they Spanish or Mexican?

Cool, I'm just getting into Mexican Cinema. I have a ton of Santo movies, but those are just silly.

I just watched Nuevo Mundo - really cool (warning - it's in Spanish with no subtitles) which isn't horror, but was really well made and rather subversive. It's about the priest who comissions an artist to paint an image of La Virgen with indio features and the uproar it causes within the Church and the community.

Night of the Bloody Apes

My favorite Mexican horror film. Has Mexican wrestlers, mad scientist dr. operating on his son to turn him into an ape monster, gory close up eye gouging, ripping the tops off Mexican babes and more. Beautifully cheesey.

I've been wanting to see that one for ages, though was slightly disappointed to find out in a review that there isn't more than one ape. Sounds like fun nonetheless. Santo movies are pretty goofy until you look at how seriously luchadors are taken by Mexican culture. Santo films can be looked at as large Batman crossovers, starring real people elevated to tall tale proportions. The effects are usually quite bad, and the plots are pretty laughable, but sometimes they do a decent job emulating the Hammer movies the later ones want to imitate. I was surprised by all the gore, actually. Santo are hillarious cult, but there are some serious things at their core to be taken in.

I haven't caught that one. I look forward to seeing it, though. Also Curse of the Crying Woman.
