Another animated movie of doom.

Beautiful. Loved it.

Grace (2009). Not your typical horror flick, it was not really scary but instead disturbing. The story was pretty good overall. This movie really captured the gritty realities of some of the more overlooked aspects of a life when it turns messy. The direction was very good from a relative newcomer. The acting was fine, and the camerawork was pretty fun, especially with the use of focus. Fairly gory and very unsettling, i wouldn't recommend this to pregnant gals or those with young children.

Paranormal Activity (2007). i thought this one to be genuinely fearful. i watched it just before going to sleep, which was perfect for effect. i think much of the scare factor here comes from making that which is mundane into a potential time of terror. Good stuff. .

i don't think so, but they may have hijacked the basic concept of a possessed doll from them. BDV was pretty much an over the top sexploitation piece with no boundaries. It was kinda a "so bad its fun" thing; it did have a couple of hilarious moments.

Sad and frustrating story. Great sci-fi.

Once again human kind is portraited as selfish and evil. And african people as utterly insane. :D

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire (2009)

Wasn't crazy about it. Doesn't really give you much reason to care about the main character beyond the fact that she has a shitty life. Her situation is powerfully portrayed through strong acting and solid direction, but the fact is that Precious just isn't a very likable character. Not all movies have to make you like the main character, but for something like this to work you should be able to feel something for her...maybe it's just because I'm from the absolute wrong demographic, but I really couldn't care much at all.

It's not really a bad movie, just not as good as the hype machine wants you to think. It's well made and showcases some strong performances - I don't think she deserves to win, but Mo'Nique will be getting a well deserved Oscar nomination for her role as the abusive mother - but overall it fell pretty flat for me.
