Les Yeux Sans Visage

I got an Amazon gift certificate for Christmas which I promptly spent on movies. The one that I wanted most was Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes without a face), a French horror film from 1958. Very atmospheric - a few good makeup effects - spooky music and design. I highly recommend it.

$25 for VHS, no DVD available through Amazon. It was a lot of money, but at least it was a gift certificate.

Absolutely one of the great horror films ever made. So clinical and yet poetic. Love the ending with the girl walking away into the wood...

The short " Blood of the Beast" wasn't too bad either. If you ever wanted to see the inside workings of a Slaughterhouse, here is your chance. Ramming that rod down through the hole in the cows head to destroy its spinal cord is just brutal.

eyes without a face (les yeux sans visage)

i recently watched a french horror movie from the 1950s called "eyes without a face." it's directed by georges franju. it's really incredible though, i was taken by surprise.

the film is about a surgeon who gets in an auto accident with his beautiful daughter in the car, pretty much destroying her face. driven insane with guilt, he has his nurse kidnap young women and he removes the skin from their faces to try to restore his daughter's beauty. the daughter, in the meantime, wears a simple, pale mask that comes off as a terrifying image in the movie.

it's extremely eerie and atmospheric, complete with really weird circus-sounding music that plays during the creepiest parts.

anyway, it's definitely worth at least a rent (i'd actually buy it), although it can be hard to find (i got it off of blockbuster online). it's part of the criterion collection as well.

i second your recommendation. worth buying cause you'll definitely get round to watching it multiple times. i think i heard about it in the hdc top 100 lists. just don't watch the extra documentary 'blood of the beasts' if you are an animal lover and/or carnivore.

I highly recommend this one to anybody who hasn't seen it yet. Amazingly graphic, for the time it was released, and the score by Maurice Jarre is one of his most memorable. A good companion piece would be Franju's Judex or Powell's Peeping Tom. This one will haunt you forever, and is in my top 100.
