Omg it was eyegasmic! The artistry in these movies is so beautiful, I only hope Army of Darkness only intensifies the epic vibes instead of killing it. I borrowed it from the school library but haven't had time to watch it yet.
I really enjoyed Army of Darkness. It stays in the Evil Dead world. It has a more fun tone to it. I think you'll dig it.

I love it! One of my favorite Fulci works and naturally one of the all time classic surreal horrors. How do you rate it, Sculpt?

GLORY (1989). Not a horror film, but very good Civil War drama with excellent makeup/FX work by Carl Fullerton, Kevin Yagher, Everett Burrell and Mike Trcic who all left their mark in 80's/90/s horror offerings. *****

Well, Repo, it's a taste thing. Some types of surreal really drive me nutso! I mean in a bad way.

Ironically, I guess, I'm very into symbolism, subconscious, psychedelic art, I even dig the Dali... (Salvador)... but in regards to the surreal of The Beyond, the inconsistencies, it just drove me nuts. I guess I like meaning in my horror. Even the "and then strange things start to happen" stretches in some horror films just aren't my cup of tea.

In that case I can see how The Beyond wouldn't rate very high with you. I wonder, along with your preference for meaning in horror, do you also prefer more linear story telling? The Beyond is fairly linear but many surrealist films are not. Just curious as to your preference, if you have any at all. I can get behind either style as long as the film is compelling.

Yes, I liked Beyond's linear story assembly. I liked lot's of the visuals and shot choices.

Do I prefer more linear story telling? Probably.

I mean, I've seen non-linear done really well, where it's integral to the presentation -- creating curiosity, setting up suspense, etc. Every once in awhile I'll see a film, or TV ep, that jumbles up the time line and I can't see how/why it was used... where it basically doesn't significantly change how the audience experiences the subsequent sequences.

Take a film like Crash (2004)... which breathed new life into my lungs... it's non-linear, and the interweaving character/stories and ensemble cast -- that didn't bother me a second. I thought it was fantastic, and not just technically. I thought it was one of the most loving films since Yellow Submarine. Heck, should be required viewing after this election.
