ZMDs: Zombies of Mass Destruction

July 22, 2008

The movie rights to Red 5 Comics' horror/action title ZMDs: Zombies of Mass Destruction have been snatched up by Hollywood production company Benderspink.

The comic, from writer-producer Kevin Grevioux (Underworld), tells the story of a government weapons program that drops zombies, designed to be photosensitive and dissolve by a set time, into war zones at night to destroy the enemy population. But after one fails to self-destruct in the Middle East, a team of elite soldiers must enter hostile territory to stop a growing zombie army.

Word of the acquisition comes via The Hollywood Reporter.

The Alberta-based Red 5 Comics was created by Paul Ens, formerly with Lucas Online, and Scott Chitwood, co-founder of Star Wars fansite TheForce.net.

The company recently setup another of their titles, Afterburn, with Tobey Maguire and Neal Moritz producing for Relativity.

Benderspink has multiple comic adaptations in development.

The Los Angeles Film Festival is almost upon us (June 18-28) and appearing this year are three horror films of note.

Playing in the "Dark Wave" section are the highly anticipated Embodiment of Evil (starring Brazil's Coffin Joe), and I Sell the Dead, which just got picked up for distribution by IFC.

Playing in their "Guilty Pleasures" section is Kevin Hamedani's ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction. Life in a conservative small town is complicated enough for a young Iranian-American woman and a not-completely-out gay couple, but now they also have to deal with zombie hordes in this splatter-filled comedy.

After Dark Films has picked up ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction, director Kevin Hamedani's horror comedy.

The film will join After Dark's 2010 Horrorfest lineup, which is coming to theaters on January 29, 2010.

The Horrorfest marks the fourth year for the "8 Films to Die For" series.

ZMD joins the titles DREAD, Hidden, The Graves and Lake Mungo in the fest.

ZMD is the tale of a conservative island community that's under attack. "Port Gamble, Washington is being overrun with brain eaters," a company press release tells us, "and the people seem powerless to stave them off. A rag tag band of rebels led by Frida (Janette Armand), an Iranian college student suspected of being an Iraqi terrorist, and Tom (Doug Fahl), a gay business man who has returned to town with his partner to come out to his mother, tries to turn the tide and push the invading hoards of undead back."

"We are so pleased to offer up a gory, sharp film with such social relevance," said After Dark Films Executive Stephanie Caleb. "It brings a new level of variety to this year's fest and we're happy to have such a fun film to share with our fans."
