J.J. Abrams brings a Mystery...

June 18, 2008

They say that fact is stranger than fiction, and based on a new project being set up by Paramount, that may well turn out to be true.

The studio has announced plans to team up with producer J.J. Abrams for a feature based on a mystery contained in an enormous New York City apartment.

According to Variety, the film is inspired by a New York Times article on the subject, which hit stands last week. Written by Penelope Green and entitled "Mystery on Fifth Street," it tells the story of Steven B. Klinsky and Maureen Sherry, a couple who bought a 4,200-square-foot Fifth Avenue apartment in 2003. They then hired architect Eric Clough to gut the place to make renovations, and that's when the fun began.

Inspired by Klinsky's request to hide a poem he had written in one of the walls, Clough started work on a huge scavenger hunt, concealing secrets, games and messages in the furniture and fittings. He also collaborated with fellow architect and graphic designer Heather Bensko on a book containing clues, and even produced a soundtrack for the hunt.

The family found the first of the puzzles in late 2006, and spent the next two weeks searching the apartment for more, studying walls and ceilings, discovering keys and keyholes and eventually finding Klinsky's poem hidden behind a secret panel.

Abrams will produce a feature based on the story through his Bad Robot production company, and has already hired writers Maya Forbes and Wally Wolodarsky (The Rocker, Monsters vs. Aliens) to pen the script.
