you mentioned motown - and your parents ..
i'm assuming then you have had proper exposure to real R&B, aretha, sam cooke, sam and dave, otis redding ....etc .. i hear what many young people today call R&B and it makes me want to hurl..

However I do listen to the "modern R&B" as well like the Beyonces, Rihannas, Alecia Keys, etc. Those she's probably the only "modern R&B diva" that's still a bit "classic" that would get respect from the "old school" artists--because like many of them she writes lyrics, music and composes herself. But yeah, when it comes to music, some of my older acquaintences "35 and over" say I was "born before my time." They're shocked at times, how much I know about what was "the heart of music" back then.
