Finally got a chance to see this and it's excellent. I think a lot of people aren't going to like this. Its slow and focuses a lot of the Japanese government but much like the original, which was an allegory on japans fears of the nuclear bomb in the wake of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this movie uses this in the wake of the earthquake in 2011 and the governments fears of another similar incident.

Godzilla is shown at it's most powerful and terrifying portrayed less as a destructive monster and more as a malevolent God and specific scenes of its destruction are amazing.

The story is great and builds real tension and a real feel of how todays Japan would handle and deal with Godzilla attacking. The movie doesn't shy away from stating that Godzilla does cause massive amounts of death and is seen as a real threat. It's one of the best Godzilla movies ever made and all Godzilla fans should see it.

Just don't bother if you're looking for monster fights or a similar movie to Legendarys 2014 film which was pretty mediocre in my opinion

I Saw Shin about 6 months ago. It is inspired by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, tsunami and Fukushima meltdowns... it's obvious when Godzilla pours in.

This film is actually fast paced, with a modern Hollywood feel. It's just not monster fights but rather emergency response.

I thought it was interesting and mildly exciting for swaths. But the last quarter and ending were really weird for me. I didn't see the point and purpose, and it became a bit tedious... ironically when the Godzilla thing starts up again, but for no meaningful effect except lighting effects.

I'd give Shin more a 6/10. I enjoyed Godzilla (2014) more.

Guess what...after watching it only once at the first day first show, I was eager to give it a 2nd watch. Yesterday managed the time & went to the theater with my wife this time. She loved it too. It was a late afternoon show and still the theater was packed! At the opening day as they had no idea, the same theater didn't show the post credit scene at the end but this time they finished it properly; glad they responded to my complaint positively. Anyway, it was an absolute blast of a monster mayhem flick, IMO! Unlike Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA (2014), this time they made it sure of nobody can complain on Kong or any other monster's lack of screen time. A highly entertaining flick for monster movie lovers. I understand how or why some viewers & critics complaining on cheesy dialogs & lack of character development parts of the film but to me, those issues were more or less nicely compensated by releasing one after another vicious & weird massive creatures on screen along through the “survey job” turned survival journey of an expedition team on Skull Island. Moreover, this time it isn't that tragic 'The Beauty & the Beast' tale of a colossal ape who all just wanted to have a long date with his woman of love but ended up falling down dead from the Empire State Building. They avoided that classic Kong tale mostly due to as they already planned to put KONG into their MonsterVerse..a shared cinematic universe for the Monsters like Big G and other popular Toho/Kaiju creatures. This Kong is quite an angry young lad who's damn serious about protecting his territory and its all helpless inhabitants & creatures from anything that threatening his kingdom. Though he's only around 100 ft tall (while Godzilla was 300 ft in 2014's Gareth Edwards' take) but as KSI is set in post Vietnam War 70s era, so we can expect he'll become more gigantic in time & eventually be able to match in size to compete with the big G & give a fair fight in 2020's Legendary's KING KONG V GODZILLA!! Although I'm not sure about how this Kong going to save himself from Godzilla's atomic breath!? Anyway, The epic final battle in KSI was a treat to watch.
My only complaint is that they really did again show too much (almost all the creatures) on those countless clips & trailers before the release that left little amount of surprise in terms of newly introduced M.U.T.Os for 'MonsterVerse'. Moreover, I think Peter Jackson's Skull Island was more diversifying & interesting in terms of wildlife creatures. KSI still falls bit short of exploring the mysteries & weirdness of the island, particularly they should have added a giant Insect Pit segment like PJ did in KING KONG (2005). Funny thing is at one point John C Reilly's character, Marlow was talking about a giant ant that sounds like a bird & lives in the tree(!!) but strangely they didn't show that thing! Hope they'll reveal it in the extended edition Blu-ray release.

So, only if you're like to have some fun, monster-mayhem time then give it a watch but otherwise, for a serious or solid character driven great story, KSI may going to disappoint you little. I loved it may be because to some extent, I really did get more or less all what I was expecting from it or perhaps I was just excited to see our most beloved giant ape on screen after more than a decade.

For me it's the other way around. I prefer an approach like this with less focus on the characters and more on the creature and its effect on the world.
But I am looking forward to the Godzilla 2014 sequel.
Too bad we'll have to wait until 2019.
