Body Gets Stuck In Windshield

Body Stuck In Vehicle's Windshield

Warren, Ohio - The man killed in a hit-and-run crash Monday was stuck in the windshield of the fleeing car until the driver stopped a short distance away and pulled the victim out before continuing to drive off, police said.

Traffic investigator Michael Stabile said Edward S. Cleer kept driving on Fifth Street S.W. with the body of Edward E. Haymon stuck in his Chevrolet Cavalier's windshield while witnesses chased down the vehicle, pleading with Cleer stop.
Witnesses told police the 43-year-old Cleer didn't stop until he reached Highland Avenue S.W., where he pulled Haymon's body from the car and left. Haymon was dead at the scene.

Cleer, 926 Howland Wilson Road S.E., faces charges of not stopping after an accident and aggravated vehicular homicide, which has the element of alcohol being involved in the crash, Stabile said.

Haymon's brother, Willie Haymon Jr., said Wednesday the family still was in the process of making funeral arrangements and declined further comment.

According to police, Edward E. Haymon and a friend were walking side-by-side heading east on Fifth Street S.W. toward Highland Avenue S.W. shortly before midnight.

Stabile said a witness, who also was driving on Fifth Street S.W., told police Cleer's Cavalier passed her vehicle about 300 feet before the impact, and as he was coming back into his own lane when he struck Haymon.

Injuries to Haymon show that he had actually turned, saw the car coming and tried to run from the vehicle, police said.

Witnesses told police they didn't see Cleer's car's brake lights until he reached Highland Avenue, where they said he stopped to pull Haymon's body from his windshield.

About 15 minutes later, an unmarked detective's car stopped Cleer on Union Street S.W. He refused to give a blood sample and a sample taken with a warrant is waiting to be processed, Stabile said.

An official at the Trumbull County Coroner's Office said Haymon's cause of death was multiple blunt traumatic injuries due to a motor vehicle accident.

Cleer remains in the Trumbull County Jail in lieu of a $75,000 bond.
