my ignorance is on display
Hello horror writer/readers
As some of you know I'm a horror screenwriter. I've written a ton of screenplays, sold a few, even seen a few made. I have a reasonable understanding of how Hollywood works, but I'm out of my depth here. I've recently been writing some short fiction...and my trusted readers are all pushing me to submit the material for publication. But I have no idea of how to go about this. I've been told to always start at the top and get used to rejection...being enmired in Hollywood, rejection is a way of life for me, so no big deal, so... First off Who publishes short horror fiction? Which periodicals are the best? I typically read shorts in anthologies or in collections from a single author and unfamiliar with the horror periodical market. Which horror periodicals do you folks read? also How does one go about getting their work read? Is there a good standard query letter template that anyone uses?

Lots of info about horror writing in general:
http://horror.fictionfactor.com/ Good starting points to both online and print publication: http://horror.fictionfactor.com/epublishers.html http://horror.fictionfactor.com/publishers.html This is where i have been looking for years. havent had a thing published and only ever got one actual rejection letter, but it was nice to get a response. Ironically, i am showing you of all people this. The one rejection letter i got was From Sci-Fi magazine for Father Dillon;s Funeral (Night of the Living Dead, more or less) Yep, I got turned down by Sci-fi 3 tyears ago, dont I feel cool :)

Thanks. I checked that one out and submitted my story "The Flesh Show" to one of the anthologies. It's one of the rare publishers that allows you to submit to other publishers simultaneously.
Next I'm going to try sending it to Cemetery Dance Magazine. Wish me luck!

I don't know if this is any help but I've noticed that two horror magazines - Fangoria and The DarkSide (UK) have fiction sections, may be worth a try.

I just searched google for horror magazines and went with the ones that accepted submissions. It takes forever for them to read it though, and even longer to get a response.

Weird tales, Cemetery Dance, Talebones, Apex, City Slab, Chiascuro (online) Heliotrop, and Dark Recesses, just to name a few. Ralan.com has a listing of markets available, dead, and operable, so you can really narrow down your search there. Also, the Horror Library at Zoetrope can be a good place to find info and just chit chat with a huge base of horror fans. Join the short story forum. You have to read and review five before you can post, but it guarantees you will be read. Plus everyone has to write a 100 word review. And it helps you interact more. You'll get it all over there. Hope this helps.
