The Shining and The Amityville Horror
There are lots of similarities between those 2 movies (dad getting mad, wanting to kill the family with an axe, haunted house, countdown of the days, etc). The Amityville horror came out in 1979 and The Shining in 1980 according to imdb.com but I guess they could be wrong.
In your opinion, who copied who? It's for a little research I'm doing. The Shining was based on the novel by Stephen King in which Jack Torrance tries to kill his family with a croquet stick, not with an axe. Then again, they say that The amityville Horror is based on a true story. I don't know to which extend tough. |

I would be willing to bet that the similarities are coincidence. most likely, jack's use of an axe in the movie was kubrik wanting to make it more frightening. He never would have been able to include the "Heeeeeeeere's Johnny!" if Jack tried breaking the door down with a mallet. Also, they got to use more blood when he killed Jazz from the Transformers :)
if you boil them down to their elements, though, they are very similar. both places were built on indian burial grounds.....

It's possible that King got the idea for writing his book after hearing about the story of Amityville, then both movies were made.
But who really cares? The Shinings pwns Amityville Horror.
