NBC has picked up the rights to "Demonologist," from horror writing hellraiser Clive Barker and freelance scribe Teddy Tannenbaum (USA Network's "The Dead Zone"). The show will revolve around a married couple who fight demons -- but are more afraid of their 15-year-old daughter.

"It's a funny, spooky thriller in hopefully the good Hitchcockian tradition," NBC drama chief Chris Conti said. "If you can pull this off, you can scare the hell out of people and make them laugh at the same time." They also mention Buffy when describing the new show.

The most frightening part of the announcement might have been when the network guy said that they are adding the show to their lineup because they are looking for "family shows with characters that just jump off the screen." Somehow "family shows" and horror don't sound like a match made in heaven, but with Barker being involved, we'll hold off making any judgements until we see the show.

Of interest to true-horror fans, "Demonologist" is based on real-life couple Ed and Lorraine Warren, who profess to fight demons. According to the Warren's official website, "The Warrens have been the nations top psychic researchers for over 3 decades. They were two of only a handful of investigators ever allowed into the infamous "Amityville Horror" home and have the only pictures ever taken inside the house."

The Warrens have had two previous movies made of their cases, one called "The Haunted", and the other "The Demon Murder Case" from their book "The Devil in Connecticut." Besides the movies, the Warrens have published nine books of their own.
