Hong Kong super-splatter-director and Tarantino-influencer John "The Killer" Woo will be directing a new science fiction television show for American audiences. Woo's updated version of the 1960's re-run favorite "Lost In Space" will be written by Buffy The Vampire Slayer alum Doug Petrie.

With the all star team heading the project, and a $2+ million dollar per episode budget, there was a bidding war between the major networks for rights to air the show. WB (the ex-Buffy network) won out and will be the home for the much-anticipated project.

Petrie said his vision for "Lost in Space" is for a show that's "not about hardware."

"It's not about laser blasters and starships and funky aliens, though there will be bags of all of those," Petrie said. "That stuff is just the best window dressing, the way monsters provided a way for 'Buffy' to say high school is hell. The show is going to be more based on what's going on with the typical American family rather than a sweeping space opera."

The new "Lost In Space" won't feature a Dr. Smith character, though there will be a robot. The series will be set in 2097, but should start airing sometime before then.
