Seattle is gearing up to celebrate the works of prolific and influential macabre author H. P. Lovecraft during the 10th Annual H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival. The festivities start on Thursday, October 9, and continue through the weekend.

Lovecraft became famous for the large volume of dark fiction he produced, for which he is hailed the father of modern horror. During his life, he wrote dozens of horror stories (including "The Call of Cthulhu" and "The Dunwich Horror"). Lovecraft is also known as a prolific letter-writer, authoring over 100,000 pieces of correspondence in his lifetime. He also dabbled in journalism, literary criticism, and philosophy.

Special guests for the event include actor Jeffrey Combs and director/producer Brian Yuzna ("Reanimator"). On Friday, a half-day seminar and panel discussion on the author and his works will take place.

Film showings start at 7pm nightly. This year's films include "Beyond Re-Animator", "Necronomicon," the Italian "The Shunned House," "Unnameable II: The Statement of Randolph Carter," as well as three nightly blocks of short films.

The event is made possible by a grant from the Oregon Council for the Humanities, a statewide nonprofit organization and independent affiliate of the NEA. For more information on tickets and events, see the official Festival website.
