The only 2 mods that I've dealt with as moderators are Rayne and zwoti. I've talked to kpro too, but not as a moderator, and I don't know allmykids at all. But you all seem fair. When in doubt, I would say contact the person in question and find out what the story is. It may just be an unintenional or mindless mistake. We all want to talk freely here, so if there is a question in someone's behavior, just ask them about it. and tell them to knock it off if necessary. PEACE!

Have we come up with a final 10 sentence conclusion yet?

There has been a lot of good ideas here and I agree, it's a tough call. One thing I would like to suggest, and I have seen it happen, is if someone is about to get banned, give them a warning. They may really not know what they did or said was over the line. And if it's a group of people having some fun and a mod having a bad day or taking what is being said in the wrong way, then we can explain and/or defend our actions
Indeed, since those of us who have been previously banned with no explanation should be at least given advice that it might be down to our mere presence or persistence in a debate since we do not fire off personal derogatory remarks or defamation in any shape or form (unless we're clearly, obviously joking).

I wonder if someone can be banned purely through mods bowing to pressure in light of complaints received through PM? If so, are the complaints justified... or possibly overreaction/misinterpretation?

Censorship won't do, especially in a horror film website.

ISP bans would seem the logical option to stop the trouble returning.

And I agree anyone christened 'Roderick' just has to be an asshole.

:D

The term "maliciously insult" is subjective, so.. that rule is innadequate. What is "malicious" to some, may be funny and insignificant to others.

You should be discussing the RULES, not the banning of that guy.

Make a decent set of rules and then decide who to ban. Based on that rule, I simply cannot decide whose "side" I'm in. It's impossible... I'd have to consider the "malice" on his comment based on their entire history as members... impossible.

its a tough subject especially b/c we communicate through text and not voice. i make a sarcastic remark in a message and the person on the other end could take it very personal b/c the tone in my head might not translate into what i type. as far as this goes its too hard to mediate insults unless they are one, blatantly obvious; person1: "i think that scream is the best horror movie ever." person2: "you are a fucking moron and i would kill and rape your family if i saw them in the street... and your dog too." two, turn an otherwise interesting thread ugly: one person is debating a subject w/ another and conversation goes from constructive criticism to calling each other out. and three, not an insult so much but a hi-jacking of a thread (kinda like what cheeba did).

So basically people need to develop a tough skin as far as the rips go... Only when it get's ugly (in every meaning of the word) should the moderators step in.
