this is a good example of 'eats shoots and leaves'. seen one way, it could be eats, shoots and leaves' (as in someone ate, then shot someone, and then left) or eats shoots and leaves (as in a panda, which eats shoots and leaves).
So, read as: the hell im NOT dave - would mean "i am dave, why the hell would you say i'm not"
or read: the hell! i'm not dave! would mean "what the hell are you saying? i'm not dave"
a grammatical conundrum.
