The first poster for Corbin Bernsen's Dead Air is out.

The story revolves around a radioshow team attempting to warn its listeners after a huge explosion turns zombies on the loose in L.A.

The poster can be viewed here.

Two More Join Dreamworks' "The Ruins"

Caitlin Stasey (Rogue) and Joe Anderson (Creep) have joined Jonathan Tucker, Laura Ramsey, Jena Malone and Shawn Ashmore in Carter Smith's The Ruins, which is now filming in Australia.

The film is a stunning horror thriller, that follows four American friends on vacation in Cancún, Mexico—Jeff, Amy, Eric and Stacy—who meet a German tourist, Mathias, and persuades them to join his hunt for his younger brother, Henrich, last seen headed off with a new girlfriend toward some ruins. The four soon regret their impulsive decision after they find themselves lost in the jungle and freaked out by signs that they’re headed for danger.

Divoff and Savini bringing "The Dead Matter"

Over the past ten years, Midnight Syndicate has been taking listeners on musical journeys into the darkest corners of their imaginations. . . Now they will bring their nightmarish visions to the big screen with the supernatural horror thriller, The Dead Matter.

Today it was revealed via the official website that Andrew Divoff (Lost, Wishmaster, The Rage), Tom Savini (Night of the Living Dead remake, From Dusk Till Dawn) and Jason Carter (The Coffin) have all joined the cast of the film, which begins principal photography this August. Robert Kurtzman's Precinct 13 Entertainment (The Rage) will produce.

"Blade: House of Chthon" on DVD in September

New Line Home Entertainment has announced Blade: House of Chthon which stars Sticky Fingaz, Jill Wagner, and Jessica Gower.

This all-new release will include an extended cut of the feature length Blade: The Series premiere. This 88 minute feature will be available to own from the 18th September, and should retail at around $19.97. Extras will include audio commentaries, and a making of documentary.

You can view some of the artwork here.

Saw maker and Universal fighting over "Repo"

Ok, this type of stuff goes on all the time in Hollywood... but this is ridiculous. A new movie was announced today over at Universal that's a complete rip-off of Darren Lynn Bousman's previously announced "Repo! The Genetic Opera", which is set to lense in August.

The writers of the new Uni film claim to have been working on the story for nearly four years... but I'm pretty sure that Repo! was a play before that (I guess it's for them to duke it out). Whatever - judge for yourself. Read on for more...

Jude Law and Forest Whitaker are set to star in "The Repossession Mambo" for Universal Pictures. The thriller marks the feature directing debut of Miguel Sapochnik. Stuber/Parent's Scott Stuber and Mary Parent produce.

The morality tale is set in the near future, when artificial organs can be bought on credit, with the understanding that defaulting on payment will result in a fatal repossession.

Eric Garcia and Garret Lerner wrote the script based on a novel by Garcia, and they've been working on "The Repossession Mambo" with Sapochnik for the past four years.

The film begins shooting this summer, which should put it a heartbeat ahead of "Repo! The Genetic Opera!"; the latter pic is a musical but harvests similar organ-donor repo turf. Twisted Pictures is financing the latter pic, which "Saw" helmer Darren Lynn Bousman is directing.

Sapochnik wrote and directed the short film "The Dreamer."

When he arrives it soon becomes apparent this is no ordinary investigation, he is confronted by the discovery that a strange virus is turning soldiers into Zombie like killers.

First Peek at "Living Hell"

The trailer for Richard Jeffries's Living Hell is out. The plot concerns a schoolteacher, Frank Sears, who has carried with him a strange scar given to him by his mother before she committed suicide. The markings lead Frank to a top secret Cold War military project where an unstoppable, malignant organism is unleashed.

Special FX done by Robert Kurtzman.

The trailer can be viewed here.

"Borderland" to Hit Screens on September 28

Zev Berman's Borderland is finally coming to a theater near you on September 28.

In the film, three Texas University seniors, on the eve of their graduation, road-trip to a Mexican Border town for a final weekend of drinking and debauchery. Their vacation becomes a living nightmare as the trio runs afoul of an ancient blood cult looking for human sacrifice.

Based on true events, Borderland blends the raw fear of Texas Chainsaw Massacre with the gritty true crime realism of In Cold Blood, evoking a world of paranoia, death and terror.

"Day of the Dead" Remake, Writer Speaks

Writer Jeffrey Reddick has spoken at joblo.com about Nu Image and Millennium Films' delayed remake of George Romero's classic zombie film Day of the Dead.

He tells the site, "I'm not sure when the movie's coming out. I know they're doing some reshoots very soon...and the production company, Nu Image, recently bought First Look...so they're still strategizing on the release date. They're aiming for a Fall release, but it depends on how quickly they get the reshoots done."

Furthermore, he adds, "I'm doing the re-writing...for the most part. Steve [director Steve Miner] does like to write sometimes too though. The good news is that Nu Image is really behind the film. I was worried after the low box office of recent releases...but it hasn't spooked them."

The original follows a group of scientists and military personnel holed up in an underground bunker because the world above is overrun with zombies. The lumbering flesheaters eventually find a way in and wreak havoc on the scientists who've been experimenting on their undead brethren.

Bruce Campbell out of "Bubba" sequel?

While we patiently wait for Bruce Campbell's My Name Is Bruce (due to be released in September), lucky fans have been getting early looks across the Nation (at Ashland and CineVegas Film Festivals).

Today AICN received an e-mail from a fan who saw it, loved it and came back with some news (good and bad). First, if a sequel were to be made, it will be called My Name Is Still Bruce; second, Campbell himself had terrible news revealing that (as of right now) he will have no part in Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, the sequel to Don Coscarelli's popular cult film Bubba Ho-Tep.

A short check of the movie's status at IMDB confirms that Campbell has indeed been struck off from the cast list. The exact details of his de-attachment have yet to be known from either the movie's makers or Campbell himself.

"The Host" sequel coming in 2009

Chungeorahm Film, the film production and distribution company of the blockbuster hit 'The Host,' plans to release a sequel to the film in 2009, according to the Korea Times.

But director Bong Joon-ho, the driving force of the original, will not join the film crew making 'The Host 2' as he has other plans.

"We'll start making the film from this fall,'' Choi Yong-bae, CEO of Chungeorahm, was quoted as saying by Yonhap News.

South Korean technical staff will make a 10-minute computer graphic (CG) test film this fall.

"We have gathered technical know-how from making `The Host,''' Choi said. The film was made in collaboration with foreign technical staff including some from the United States. "I think we can use domestic CG technology this time.''

The budget will be about 10 billion won, similar to the previous film, and the same monster will be used.

Dark Castle announces 3 new movies, "Haunted Hill" sequel

Joel Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment genre label has inked a multiyear pact with Warner Premiere to produce two or three films a year directly for DVD, beginning with sequel "Return to House on Haunted Hill."

Dark Castle -- backed by private equity and part of Silver Pictures -- also will produce original digital content for the Internet and wireless platforms that will be used to complement direct-to-DVD releases or to tell standalone stories that further the Dark Castle brand.

Warner Bros. launched Warner Premiere last year to make a play in the increasingly competitive direct-to-DVD and digital arenas.

Dark Castle won't produce just horror titles for Warner Premiere but other genre pics as well, including actioners and thrillers. Projects could encompass prequels, sequels and original titles that fit the Dark Castle brand.

And Dark Castle and Warner Premiere are sweetening the pot for consumers able to play high-def DVD formats, introducing "navigational cinema" technology that will allow viewers to interact with the storyline. Warners backs both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

The high-def version of "Return to House on Haunted Hill," set to bow in October under the Dark Castle Home Entertainment banner, will include seven viewer choices leading to over 90 iterations of the storyline, according to Warner Premiere prexy Diane Nelson.

"No one knows how to develop, produce or market to this audience better than Joel," Nelson said.

From Silver's perspective, pact gives Dark Castle the opportunity to expand its brand, work with newer directors and tell stories in a way that can't be done in a theatrical release.

"We are continually looking for fresh and edgy ideas for our films and for our fans to experience," Silver said.

The direct-to-DVD market has grown by 30% in the last five years.

Other film projects in development under the pact include supernatural thriller Widow Whisps; psychological suspense tale Odds, exec produced by JC Spink and Chris Bender; and Cheerleaders in Trouble, a homage to 1980s slasher pics.

Dark Castle, launched last fall, is backed by more than $240 million in equity. The holdings will be used to finance at least 15 movies over six years budgeted between $15 million and $40 million, with Warners distributing the entire slate.

Theatrical films already released under the label include "The Reaping." Upcoming films include "Whiteout" and "RocknRolla."

China-Singapore jointly produce "Painted Skin"

Donnie Yen is to star in Painted Skin, a rare Chinese supernatural actioner being put together as a China-Singapore co-production. The $10 million budget period pic is to be jointly helmed by Wilson Yip Wai-shun (who previously directed Yen in "Dragon Tiger Gate") and Andy Chin Wing-keung.

The pic will lense in China in the final quarter of this year or early 2008, with dates likely dependent on the schedule of as yet uncast female lead. Pic also features Singapore's Qi YuWu "(Home Song Stories"). With large digital effects quotient, pic is scheduled for delivery by end of 2008.

Story is about a love hate relationship between a vixen spirit and a group of humans, and has been adapted from a series of Chinese classic stories called "Strange Tales of Liaozhai."

Anonymous starting on "Animals"

Anonymous Content and T&C Pictures have signed Mark Blucas (Thr3e), Nicki Aycox (Dead Birds), Eva Amurri (Saved!), Andy Comeau (The Babysitters) and Naveen Andrews (Grindhouse, Lost) for the horror film Animals, which begins production this week in Salt Lake City.

Craig Spector (A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child) adapted his original novel, which he co-wrote with John Skipp. Helming the pic is Doug Aarniokoski (The Safe Side, Highlander: Endgame), assistant/second unit director on projects for Robert Rodriguez such as "Once Upon a Time in Mexico."

The story centers on a blue-collar man in a dying factory town whose life is jolted after becoming involved in a romantic triangle amid a spate of uncontrolled violence by...you guessed it...animals.

Unreleased "30 Days of Night" spawning a sequel?

According to a scooper at Cinemablend, there are already talks in progress for a sequel to Columbia Pictures' 30 Days of Night. Usually, every studio wants their films to become a franchise and many talk about how they can lead the film into a sequel if the first is a success.

David Slade's adaptation of the Steve Niles comic, 30 Days of Night, hits theaters October 19.

Synopsis - When Alaska goes dark for 30 straight days, vampires come out to feast...

...and if enough people watch them dine, you'll see a sequel.

Stephen King Gives "1408" a Big Thumbs-Up

From Stephen King's official website (stephenking.com):

"It's a pleasure to be able to recommend '1408,' the Dimension Pictures adaptation of my story.

It stars John Cusack and opens this Friday.

This is a genuinely disquieting movie--the damn thing gets under your skin and just CRAWLS there.

For one thing, what could be more terrifying than a man haunted by The Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun?" I doubt if you'll hear much screaming in the theater (I could be wrong about that), but a lot of people are going to be sleeping with the lights on when it's over."

CHECK OUT 1408 COME FRIDAY!

Brothers Thomas and Charles Guard will direct "Sisters," which is scheduled to start filming next month in Shreveport, La.

Craig Rosenberg penned the screenplay, with a rewrite from Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro.

Stephen King & Frank Darabont talk on "The Mist"

Stephen King knows it's the little things that frighten the most.

So it's fitting that the best-selling novelist, who has had more film adaptations from his work than any modern author, finds his short stories capturing Hollywood's attention these days.

Among them are the sinister hotel-room thriller 1408, opening Friday, the creatures-in-the-fog story The Mist, coming in November, and last year's TNT miniseries Nightmares & Dreamscapes, featuring eight short tales as hour-long episodes.

"When you have a shorter piece of fiction, one of the things that's attractive to filmmakers is the idea, 'We can riff on this. We can do more to it,' " King says, adding, "It gives them wiggle room."

Filmmakers say his short stories and novellas translate better to the screen because, unlike an epic-sized novel, huge portions of the story don't have to be dropped, irking readers and leaving the occasional massive plot hole.

Eli Roth was planning to adapt King's cellphone zombie novel Cell, which has an explosively violent opening sequence. But Roth recently said the project is on hold.

The next King adaptation is The Mist, about residents of a small town who take shelter in a grocery store during a storm and begin to turn on one another when creatures that may be harbingers of the apocalypse arrive in the clouds.

Frank Darabont, the writer/director of King movies The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile (which had four Oscar nominations, including adapted screenplay and best picture), is making The Mist, from King's 1985 collection Skeleton Crew.

He says the difference between a King short story and a King novel is the difference between going 10 rounds with the author in a boxing ring or having him rush up with a sucker punch. "It's his chance to take one cool idea he wants to whap you upside the head with. It's the difference between writing a great pop song and an opera."

Darabont previously focused his efforts on King's straighter dramas but wanted to tackle the author's horror storytelling for a change: "I wanted to make a very direct, muscular kind of film."

As for King's wiggle room: "You don't want to come in and put your fingerprints all over everything, but in translation from page to screen, there is always some reinvention."

In the case of The Mist, King praises a new ending Darabont crafted, saying it is so unsettling that for many years no studio would touch it. "The ending is such a jolt — wham! — it's frightening. But people who go to see a horror movie don't necessarily want to be sent out with a Pollyanna ending."

Anchor Bay's "Hatchet" gets rated R

Today the MPAA officially gave Adam Green's Hatchet an "R" rating, thus eliminating any rumors or speculation that the original "NC-17" rating would effect the upcoming national theatrical run.

The "R" rating is for "extreme gory bloody horror violence, sexual conduct, nudity and language".

After a two month long process involving an appeal and multiple submissions to the ratings board, the film is finally in it's home stretch.

From writer/director Adam Green: "A big THANKS to everyone for their continued support and enthusiasm. Mainstream Hollywood claims that the fans will only support remakes and PG-13 horror at the box office these days. I hope that on September 7th we prove them wrong."

When a motley crew of tourists on a Haunted Swamp Tour wind up stranded, their night of comedic spooks quickly roller-coasters into a horrific nightmare as they struggle to escape the swamp alive…and with all of their pieces.

A spectacular throwback to 80’s horror and the film that’s been bringing audiences to their feet at film festivals worldwide and a cast that includes Robert Englund and Kane Hodder, HATCHET is filled with laughs, scares, and over-the-top death sequences you’ll have to see to believe.

HATCHET will open in theaters across America on September 7th.

"1408" hits jackpot, #2 at Box-Office

Dimension Films' Stephen King adaptation 1408 took in an estimated $20,175,000 for the #2 spot at the box office, making it the single highest grossing weekend opening for a King adaptation!

This also makes 1408 the only really successful horror film of 2007, further prepping the genre for a major climate change... to PG-13.

Could it be that the general horror audience is sick of the buckets of blood and guts?

Can you imagine a PG-13 Halloween or Saw IV?

The success of the film, however, is extremely important to the genre as it has shown that even in the midst of big summer movie madness a little horror film can still steal a chunk of change from the likes of Spidey, Shrek, The Fantastic Four and others.

Horror lives baby! Even if it's a little softer.

"Kill Bill - The Whole Bloody Affair" coming in November on DVD

It has already been three years since Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece Kill Bill (vol. 1, vol. 2) hit theaters.

The film, which starred Uma Thurman as a ex-assassin on a road to revenge, was split in two by Miramax due to it's length.

For years they've been promising us the uncut, re-edited single release of the film, which only screened once in it's entirety during a test showing.

This past week Amazon.com opened pre-orders for what they call Kill Bill - The Whole Bloody Affair, which is slated for DVD release on November 6, 2007.

You can view and pre-order your copy here.

Happy Holidays to us indeed!

New "Amityville" documentary in the works

Producer Ric Osuna is back again with more Amityville Horror goodies as he's prepping a new documentary on the history of The Amityville Murders.

The new doc will include re-enactments of sequences from the infamous '74 Amityville Murders that launched the "Amityville Horror" hoax - yes, for those of you who didn't know, it was revealed to be a hoax.

This will be Ric's directorial debut as he produced History's Mysteries: Amityville: The Haunting (2000) and wrote the book "The Night The Defeos Died" (2002).

Dimension Films' are pretty excited about "Mandy Lane"

Originally titled All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Dimension Films' amazing '80s homage, Mandy Lane, is finally headed to theaters on July 20!

The announcement comes kind of late, but hopefully there will be enough time to give it a sufficient push - one that it really deserves.

In the film a group of high schoolers invite Mandy Lane (Amber Heard), a good girl who became quite hot over the summer, to a weekend party on a secluded ranch. While the festivities rage on, the number of revelers begins to drop quite mysteriously.

First teaser trailer for "I Sell The Dead" is out

The official website (scareflix.net) has launched the first teaser trailer for Glenn McQuaid's I Sell the Dead, which stars Dominic Monaghan, Ron Perlman, Angus Scrimm and producer Larry Fessenden.

The film is about two body snatchers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes, who have pillaged their last grave. With just five hours before Arthur follows Willie to the chopping block, he recounts his life story to Fr Francis Duffy. It soon becomes clear that Blake and Grimes were no ordinary grave robbers. And through his stories the priest learns that not all corpses are equal.

I Sell The Dead is a kaleidoscope of terror that will leave you questioning life, death and what lies between.

Elisabeth Bathory in all her splendor coming soon

Elizabeth Bathory, the most infamous serial killer in Hungarian and Slovak history, gave a taste of what she was like in Eli Roth's Hostel: Part II (can you imagine an entire movie filled with sequences like the one featuring Heather Matarazzo strung upside down?) The Hungarian noblewoman has been a favorite horror tale figure in Eastern European myth since her demise in 1614.

Now there are not one, but two new films coming that tell the story of the horrific killer.

She's slated to cast her spell in dueling versions, one by Slovak auteur Juraj Jakubisko (featuring Anna Friel) and one by French thesp, helmer and scribe Julie Delpy(An American Werewolf in Paris), each following different instincts in getting down to who and what the powerful countess really was.

Delpy has been mum on details while prepping her 5 million Euro ($6.6 million) shoot of The Countess in authentic locations near where Bathory reigned -- and supposedly bathed in the blood of virgins to prolong her girlish looks -- in what is now Hungary and Slovakia. Her Bathory script examines the mindset of a mysterious, wealthy and cruel figure who is said to have killed some 400 girls. Delpy has said it's not exactly clear whether the countess was really behind all the bloodshed. After all, her vast land holdings and castles were worth a fortune, her husband was away at war with the Turks and some stood to gain substantially from any witch-hunt directed at Bathory.

Jakubisko, co-producer of the U.K.'s Film and Music Entertainment says the rival film Bathory conception of the bloody countess is presented in a more epic setting. Jakubisko portrays Bathory from age 10 until her death 35 years later, puts his distinctive stamp on the battle sequences and constantly moves the action from manor houses to more than 20 different castles and chateaus, with 120 speaking characters and thousands of extras.

The project has completed editing and weighs in as the most expensive production in Slovakia and the Czech Republic since 1989 with a budget of $14.5 million and a run time of 2 hours, 22 minutes. It's also the helmer's first English-language movie.

It seems the mad countess has finally won her bid for immortality -- or at least eternal youth.

Buddy Holly vs zombies?

First Elvis took on the Mummy in Bubba Ho-Tep, now Buddy Holly’s going to sing sweet nothing’s to the reanimated!

Ream Enterprises and CineXperia Productions have announced the curiously titled “Buddy Holly Vs. The Living Dead”, a new film written and directed by Justin Cash Kirkpatrick.

Evil Dead” make-up man Tom Sullivan and Lee Behymer, a prominent and respected make-up effects artist whose resume includes work on Francis Ford Coppola's “Dracula”, are involved in the production.

According to a press release, “At its core the film is about fanaticism in all its forms; from gambling to drinking to false idolization; it opens the flood gates to the subconscious where viewers realize that the real horror element of the film lies not within the ominous flesh eating monsters."

"The movie itself centers on the key players involved in making a 1950’s zombie movie and the effects of living the sort of life that lends itself to such chronic exposure to gratuitous excess. By shifting back and forth between the two plotlines Justin creates the foreboding sensation that the “fantasy” plot bears on the “real” plot. That as things gets worse within the “movie” so too do they get worse in “real life”."

"The impending hordes of undead are cleverly used as an allegory; a rotting decrepit evil descending on a seemingly wholesome town, bent on devouring everyone along with their Americana values and consequently turning them into mindless drones.”

"Resident Evil" double-feature on DVD

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced a "Resident Evil" double feature collector's set which includes both Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Apocalypse, which hits DVD on September 4.

Extras will include a Bridge scene narrated by Milla Jovovich in character and featuring film clips from all Resident Evil films that tie the first two films to the third, a Diary of an Apocalypse behind the scenes featurette, a Zombie Dog P.O.V Test, a Stuntman set tour, an Undead Boot Camp feature, a Memory Retention Division feature, and an Evil Archives photo gallery.

Finishing off the set will be an exclusive sneak peek of Resident Evil: Extinction, and a ticket to see the film when it arrives in theaters.

New "The Invasion" pics solidifying it as a disaster?

While Warner Bros. ramps up the release of the awesome Trick 'r Treat, the studio is also prepping The Invasion, which is sounding more and more like a disaster.

Today another batch of boring stills hit the web. There's nothing here yet to make audiences go see this on August 17.

The Invasion tells the story of a mysterious epidemic that alters the behavior of human beings. When a Washington D.C. psychiatrist (Nicole Kidman) discovers the epidemic’s origins are extraterrestrial, she must fight to protect her son, who may hold the key to stopping the escalating invasion.

If you are still interested, you may view the movie stills here.

Dark Sky's French horror "Them" coming in August

In a summer of big-ticket horror films dedicated to pushing the envelope on blood and guts carnage, the scariest film on the horizon may be Them – a low-budget thriller that proves the adage that what you don’t see can be so much scarier than what you do.

Written and directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud and starring Olivia Bonamy and Michaël Cohen, Them (aka Ils) was a surprise hit in Europe and was an official selection at a number of prestigious film festivals including SXSW and the Philadelphia, Seattle, Vail Colorado and Newport Film Festivals. Them will premiere in New York and Los Angeles on August 17 with additional cities and dates to follow.

The plot follows Lucas and Clémentine, a thirty-something couple, who are expats in Romania. They live in an isolated house in the suburbs of Bucharest. Clémentine, a French teacher, and Lucas, a novelist, live in peaceful happiness. However, one evening in their house, everything is turned upside down. Rain is beating outside. The telephone keeps ringing... distant voices at the end of the line... incomprehensible. The couple are not alone. The nightmare begins. THEY are there....

Don’t go into Them (aka Ils) expecting a hardcore horror film- expect a cold, dark thriller that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Tartan Asia Extreme Video bringing "Carved" and "Bad Blood" in August

No matter the time or culture…Always beware the woman who asks, “Do you think I’m pretty?”

On August 14th, Tartan Video’s Asia Extreme label will bring the killer hit Carved (aka The Slit-Mouthed Woman) to DVD shelf space across the country.

Thirty years ago, a suburban town was terrorized by the spirit of a woman whose beautiful face had been grotesquely disfigured by a jealous husband. Roaming the streets wearing a long coat and surgical mask, the spirit would approach young victims and, while removing her mask, ask “Am I pretty?” The victim’s response would almost always lead to their violent death. Now, one by one, children are disappearing again...

Directed by Koji Shiraishi (Dark Tales of Japan, Dead Girl Walking), Carved (aka The Slit-Mouthed Woman) opened theatrically in Japan in March 2007. This film will have a simultaneous US and Japanese DVD Release Date.

In Japanese, with English and Spanish subtitles, Carved (aka The Slit-Mouthed Woman) is presented in anamorphic widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS Surround Sound 5.1. Special DVD features TBD.

In the vein of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village and Alejandro Amenábar’s The Others, Tartan Video will release it’s own tale of eerie myth and consequence on August 28th with BAD BLOOD, a chilling tale of country life gone horrifically awry.

A prominent and respected family inherits a beautiful home in the country, nestled deep inside a tiny village. Despite protests from his wife and children who have grown accustomed to the finer things in life and believe the house should be sold for profit, the father decides to uproot everyone and move to the new house. Almost immediately the small group learns that the village is overshadowed by superstition, religion and mysterious folklore. Soon strange events begin occurring and family is forced to consider an alarming rumor running rampant throughout the village: by inheriting the house, they have also inherited a dark and menacing curse...

Originally titled Coisa Ruim, Bad Blood is directed by Tiago Guedes and Frederico Serra and opened in the 2006 edition of the Fantasporto Festival in Portugal.

Portuguese with English and Spanish subtitles, Bad Blood is presented in anamorphic widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS Surround Sound 5.1. Special DVD features are yet to be determined but will include the original theatrical trailer and trailers of Tartan Video’s upcoming releases.

Hitchcock's first movie "The Lodger" being remade by Sony

Another Hitchcock film being remade - maybe we all have run out of ideas officially?

David Ondaatje has signed on to direct a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's first film from 1927, The Lodger, for Sony Pictures Entertainment. Re-imagined as an urban thriller set in Los Angeles, the film marks Ondaatje's directorial debut.

Sony has not yet determined which of its labels will release "Lodger" or if the film will bow straight to video.

Michael Mailer will produce alongside Ondaatje, who also adapted the screenplay from Marie Belloc Lowndes' novel. The novel served as the basis for Hitchcock's 1927 film.

"Lodger" is based on the true story of the hysteria caused by the Jack the Ripper's killing spree that took place over several weeks in 1888.

Ondaatje's adaptation is broken into two converging plot lines set in present-day Los Angeles. The first involves an uneasy relationship between a psychologically unstable landlady and her enigmatic lodger, and the second is about a troubled detective engaged in a cat-and-mouse game with an unknown killer.

Rogue bringing comic series "Lost Squad" to the big screen

Stephen St. Leger and James Mather have found their way to The Lost Squad, coming on board to write and direct the project for Rogue Pictures.

Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter are producing.

"Squad" is based on a Devil's Due comic written by Chris Kirby and drawn by Alan Robinson. The miniseries revolved around the supernatural action-adventures of a squad of U.S. soldiers who take on weird missions during World War II, fighting Adolf Hitler's occult agents and other threats.

The pair are riding into Hollywood on buzz created by "Prey Alone," a high-octane 15-minute short they made digitally using actors and some hand props. It is that technique, similar to the fashion of how "300" was made, that they plan to use in making "Squad."

Fox Atomic scraps "28 Months - Years Later"

Fox Atomic, who made their name as Rothman’s spin-off label for horror features like “The Hills Have Eyes” and “28 Weeks Later”, are apparently cutting back on the amount of horror films they do.

Whether its because they lost money on that whole “Revenge of the Nerds” fiasco or whether they’re just taking some time-out so the oversaturated horror market can clear the backlog, one thing’s for sure, they only have one – yep, one – horror movie in the works at the moment.

Apparently the ONLY horror film in the works right now over at Fox Atomic is their PG-13 remake of The Entity, which is being directed by Japanese filmmaker Hideo Nakata (The Ring Two, Ringu).

What's even more disappointing is that Fox Atomic had planned on taking the 28 Days Later franchise up until 28 Years Later, which as of this moment, will never happen.

Now if DVD sales are through the roof for 28 Weeks Later and horror regains some lost momentum, maybe we'll work our way towards seeing 28 Months Later.

PG-13 scares continue with "Prom Night"

It was already revealed back before the film lensed that Sony Screen Gems' remake of Prom Night would be PG-13, but now a new interview with star Brittany Snow reveals more about the 'supposed' horror film that's less than exciting.

“It’s just taking the same name as ‘Prom Night’ the original, but it’s a different script. It’s actually more in the vein of ‘Fear,’ with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg,” she said.

“[It’s about when] my teacher becomes obsessed, and falls in love with me, starts stalking me, winds up at my prom night and starts wreaking havoc on everyone,” said Snow about the plot.

And after the onslaught of “torture porn” flicks like “Hostel” and “Saw,” the actress insisted that the psychological horrors of the new flick (which co-stars Idris Elba and Johnathon Schaech) will come across like a breath of fresh air. “It’s more of a thriller,” she said of the flick, directed by TV veteran Nelson McCormick. “There’s no blood, guts or gore.”

Night” dances into theaters in April of 2008.

Willem Dafoe as a vampire in "Daybreakers"

Willem Dafoe (Shadow of the Vampire, American Psycho) joins Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill in Lionsgate's Daybreakers, which is currently in pre-production.

He will play a vampire in the film that will duel with Ethan Hawke's vampire character.

It's 2016, and it has been 10 years since the plague transformed ordinary people into Vampires dependent on human blood for survival. As the human race nears extinction and the Vampire population grows desperate for blood, a group of rebel Vampires battle military forces to save the last vestiges of humanity.

The film will be directed by Peter and Michael Spierig (Undead).

First stills for "Outlander" out

Today the first official stills were released from Howard McCain's Outlander, which stars James Caviezel, Sophia Myles, Jack Huston, Ron Perlman and John Hurt.

In the script a human-like alien crashes on Earth in 509 AD who inadvertently releasing a horrible monster that he must destroy with the help of a barbaric Viking tribe.

You can view some of the stills here.

Vertigo-Lionsgate bringing "The Bates Motel"

Production company Vertigo Entertainment (The Invasion, The Strangers, Addicted, The Ring, The Grudge, The Echo) has inked a first-look television deal with Lionsgate to develop and produce scripted programming for broadcast and cable.

Vertigo, which was formed in 2001 by Roy Lee and Doug Davison, has a track record of producing U.S. remakes of Asian films. In addition to best picture Oscar winner "Departed" and "Ring," Vertigo has been a producer on the "The Grudge" and its sequel, "The Ring Two" and "The Lake House."

The company recently entered the TV arena with the MTV series "I'm With Rolling Stone."

It also is making its first foray into scripted television with "The Bates Motel," a re-imagining of "Psycho" that's being developed with Universal Media Studios, and a high-stakes gambling drama created by writer Matt O'Neal that is being shopped to networks.

Vertigo's agreement with Lionsgate expands the existing relationship between the companies, which are working together on "The Eye," a thriller produced with Cruise/Wagner that stars Jessica Alba.

Vertigo also is a producer on the upcoming films "The Invasion," a remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig; "The Strangers," a suspense thriller starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman; "Addicted," a psychological thriller starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Lee Pace; and "My Sassy Girl," a romantic comedy starring Elisha Cuthbert and Jesse Bradford.

Lionsgate reveals "Transit", announces "Jacob's Ladder" remake

Thousand Words has nabbed "Transit," a spec thriller by Michael Gilvary about a family road trip gone horribly awry.

Palmer West and Jonah Smith, who last produced the untitled Larry Charles' religion project with Bill Maher, will produce with Alison Rosenzweig.

In "Transit," a family driving through the desert is stalked by criminals who stashed stolen money in the family's car.

The script will go out to directors shortly.

Besides the Charles/Maher project, currently in post-production, West and Smith produced Chris Gorak's "Right at Your Door," which Lionsgate is releasing Aug. 24. The duo also produced "A Scanner Darkly" and "Requiem for a Dream."

Gilvary recently did a rewrite of Arthur C. Clarke's "Rendezvous With Rama" for Morgan Freeman's Revelations Entertainment. Whitewater Films will begin shooting his coming-of-ager "Greta" in the fall.

Rosenzweig has several projects in the works, including "Darksiders" at New Line, "Sanctuary" at Sobini/Lionsgate and a remake of "Jacob's Ladder," the classic 1990 Tim Robbins' pic, which follows a traumatized Vietnam war veteran who finds out that his post-war life isn't what he believes it to be when he's attacked by horned creatures in the subway and his dead son comes to visit him.

Tell me, isnt it a wee bit too early to remake Jacob's Ladder?

New German indie will create a lot of positive buzz, says director

Peter Koller, the writer-director of the German/Austrian horror film On Evil Grounds, thinks the movie will do really well when it plays at this year's FanTasia Film Festival.

Koller gave more details on the story, which involves a quick twist, “The plot is about a couple who wants to buy a loft in a desolated factory only to find out that the owner and his real estate broker are demented serial killers, but it soon turns out that the couple is way more deranged than the two killers.”

Being that nearly everything has been done before, Koller explains that this is nothing new, but he did try to play with the rules a bit, “It doesn’t sound really new, right? If you take something like this serious you’d just have another bad-guy-with-an-ax-chasing-the-chick-around-a-rotten-house-movie,” he tells us, “I wanted to play with the rules of the horror/slasher genre and not have the victims act like the ones you are used to from a normal slasher movie.”

In the film everyone is a bad guy, and it’s not to be taken too seriously, “In this one they [Romeo and Juliet] are just as bad as the bad guys. Basically everyone in the movie is an amoral asshole or just plain stupid… nobody behaves according to the expectations the audience have from watching countless slasher movies. Let’s say it is satire that you can enjoy with popcorn, pizza and a six-pack of beer.”

Koller also explained that the film is sadistic, yet not to be taken seriously. He goes as far as to say people were laughing at a rape scene, “The violence comes more in a form of a sadistic joker. These people have fun hurting each other or play sadistic games to each other. If the story would have been handled in a serious way it would make a really mean movie, but I made it all so over-the-top to make the audience laugh in moments where they are not sure whether they are even allowed to laugh - because your moral code would forbid you to do so.”

He continues, “If the movie works, people will even be laughing at rape. At the premiere in Austria even women found that certain scene extremely funny. [They were] a bit hesitant and shy at the first moment, but when the ice was broken the whole audience was cheering at a rape scene!"

Koller also reveals that the film has one juicy kill and that the film is “just as bloody as PULP FICTION. Otherwise it is mostly meaningless violence without justification. In other words: pure fun.”

So if it’s violent and fun, what exactly could it be compared to? Koller’s answer got me extremely excited, “It’s TOM & JERRY for adults. People are mean to each other, hurt each other and hunt the hell out of each other. There is no suspense as you would expect it in a horror film and it is not as serious as a thriller. What’s funny about it is that some of the shooting crew thought it [was going] to be a really tough slasher-thriller only to find out during the shoot that I was going in a direction that was more like ‘a horror movie directed by Monty Python and Tex Avery’ ”

Bring on the cartoon violence!

Check out the film at the FanTasia Film Festival in Montreal this July.

Zombie gives "Halloween" a new ultra-gory ending?

Rob Zombie has been hard at work filming new material for his remake of Halloween, which is slated for release on August 31.

Today he ended seven straight days of grueling filming around the Los Angeles area, which included the addition of six, count 'em, six new death sequences!

The film has been given a serious boost in violence, gore and bloodshed... but that's not the big news - we received word that an entire new finale has been shot. Details are mum on what is different, but we're told the new ending is quite gruesome!!

Watch for the return of Michael Myers in classic fashion in only two months.
