Yes I have received it. That takes the total tally to 14 lists so far.

I am loving the variety of choices listed in the entries. Good to see everyone thinking hard and putting their best choices in their lists, more importantly in the top 5 of their chosen 20.

(which will help me immensely when a particular villain like Dracula might get his own section)

And you will never guess who has the most points and is leading the pack of the most vile men/women in horror right now!

It's none of the usual popular ones you are thinking of.

I need more. Plenty more. Keep thinking and send me those lists!

_____V_____ 07-05-2010 02:04 AM

What about the zombies and the mutants too?

I am open to suggestions from all of you regarding this matter. Have your say.

Straker 07-05-2010 05:09 AM

I only skimmed through this thread and have been compiling my list but specifically ignoring the like of Jaws, Godzilla et al. I assumed they would fall into a monster category rather than villian. I don't really feel like they fit, personally, but I would rather create a list that follows the system everyone else is using and rework it to include all the horror monsters and such that I have so far been ignoring. I don't mind how it works, but if half the people are adding things like Godzilla and half aren't due to different interpretations then all those monsters are gonna end up annexed to the bottom of the list anyway.

I say delete the monsters, but keep the inanimate objects.

Or maybe we need a top 100 evil inanimate objects list? The African Doll from TRILOGY OF TERROR? The Car from THE CAR, or from THE WRAITH or from MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE...

Shit man, you could probably make a list with just the most nefarious cars, boats, motorcycles and bicycles

Hmm...a point to consider. Godzilla is such an iconic villain because it wipes out an entire city in an instant...I am torn whether to include it or not.

Top Evil Motor Vehicles
Top Evil Furniture And Appliances

That should be at least 20.:D

I think Godzilla deserves to be on a list of villains.

But was Godzilla really a villain?

Wasn't it just and animal being an animal, following its animal insticts? Not really evil intentions.

Just like King Kong.

Hmmm?

I agree; also in most of the Godzilla movies he was the hero.

Following their instincts can be said about most known villains in movie history. Leatherface, Michael Myers, the Alien, the Jaws shark, et al...everyone followed their instincts.

I agree that deliberate villains are many in number, but instinctive villains are also plenty.

Godzilla stakes a pretty strong claim in that department. Especially in the first 2-3 films it was portrayed in.

Don't forget, Pinhead is some sort of a hero in the first Hellraiser film. That doesn't reduce his villainy in the Hellraiser series.

I think Godzilla should be included in the list as should any animal or inanimate object that generates enough votes , but the instinctive monsters don't seem to get under the skin the way the deliberate monsters do.

And just because Pinhead disposed of a villain in the first Hellraiser movie does not in any way make him a hero.

ferretchucker 07-06-2010 06:02 AM

I'd see Godzilla to be more of an antagonist than a villain. He's the key problem in the situation and the overall negative force but I don't see him as a villain as such. It's odd, because you can't really say it's because he doesn't see what he's doing as wrong because some of the best villains do what they do with what they see as the best intentions. Even so, I just think there's SOMETHING missing. Can't put my finger on it.

Sent mine in

1: Dracula (Christopher Lee)
2: Alien
3: The Thing
4: Baron Frankenstein (Peter Cushing)
5: Predator

Ash (alien)
Dr Phibes
Frankensteins Monster
Candyman
Norman Bates
Freddy Kreuger
Mrs Carmody (the mist)
Tall Man
Wolf Man
Pazuzu/Regan MacNeil
Prince Prospero (masque of the red death)
Damien Thorn
Frank Zito (maniac)
Michael Myers
Lord Summerisle (wickerman)

_____V_____ 07-07-2010 10:19 PM

Received. Thanks, Scouse.

These are the most popular horror villains so far (appearing in 5 or more lists) :-
  • The Alien
    Asami
    Count Dracula
    Freddy Krueger
    Dr Hannibal Lecter
    Jack Torrance
    Leatherface
    Michael Myers
    Norman Bates
    Pennywise
    Pinhead
    The Thing

In addition, there are plenty who stand on the borderline of popularity - which means they figure in 3-4 lists.

But being popular doesn't necessarily mean they are leading in the Points table. That's an entirely different cup of tea. ;)

Good Call - I didn't want to fill my list with Vincient Price characters as he did so many great ones so I narrowed it down to Edward Lionheart..

I think I have listed all the major vintage villain roles of Mr. Price in my top 20. Besides Prospero & Lionheart, Mathew Hopkins is another brilliant role that I like to see in the final list here.

Btw, V...I've forget to add the following 'character' in my list of special recommendations:

Tingler [The Tingler (1959)]:)

urdevil 07-08-2010 10:53 AM

Thanks, there were a couple vying for a place but decided to keep it to what I consider to be his most memorable. It was a tricky process.

_____V_____ 07-09-2010 09:56 AM

Big thanks to urdevil for chipping in with a nice list as well. And thanks to Jenna for that fantastic compilation sent to me via email.

The list is growing, folks. Already we have over 245 entries and 68 villains in the Points table so far.

Keep them coming till the end of July. Then we start the final countdown.

Weapon X 07-13-2010 05:20 AM

I vote in favor of Godzilla to make the cut. How's the list coming along?

Doc Faustus 07-13-2010 12:53 PM

Godzilla is a force of concentrated malice. As is Michael Myers. If Michael Myers is a villain, Godzilla is a villain. But, as a force of concentrated Satanic misanthropy, I'd say King Ghidorah is a better giant monster example.

_____V_____ 07-14-2010 08:38 AM

Thanks for your list, Doc.

21 individual lists so far, and a umm...small list from Angra. As you all know, the time ends in the last week of July so those of you who asked for some time to compile your lists, send them soon.

I hope to have the compilation up by the first week of August, so if you have a favorite villain in mind to write a blurb about, feel free to book him/her.

ChronoGrl 07-14-2010 09:01 AM

Ok, wait, so Monsters DO count? I'm with Straker - I was purposefully avoiding Godzilla, Jaws, Alien because I consider them "Monsters" rather than "Villains" (interesting point that Doc brought up because I just had the Monster/Villain argument with my boyfriend re Mike Meyers - He says he's a Monster. I'm inclined to agree intellectually, but at the same time I think he's a Villain).

_____V_____ 07-14-2010 09:07 AM

Yes they do. Most monsters are villains, although all villains are not necessarily monsters.

ChronoGrl 07-14-2010 09:11 AM

Thanks!

And we must rank these lists, no?

I'm trying to go with "more obscure" to hopefully flesh it out a bit.

_____V_____ 07-14-2010 09:13 AM

Yes. If you can rank your Top 5 at least, out of your listed 20, it would be of help. If you choose to send in an unranked one, it would do too.

ChronoGrl 07-14-2010 09:15 AM

And can we give you more than 20?

_____V_____ 07-14-2010 09:16 AM

Sure! I would love it. :)

I wouldn't say that Jaws or an alligator would count, but Michael Myers is valid because he is an incarnation of evil. He works via concentrated hate. And hate is bad. Aliens and alligators and sharks don't hate and don't have apocalyptic/satanic links. If something exists solely to destroy the earth, it is an agent of evil. It's not trying to eat, it wasn't taken out of its natural habitat, it isn't destroying the earth to survive, it's committing an act of malice. Leatherface I wouldn't put on the ist because he's an unwitting dupe. The real brains of the outfit is The Cook. Monsters can be villainous if they are instinctually committing acts you would call evil for reasons beyond survival.

_____V_____ 07-15-2010 08:59 PM

Very interesting point, Doc.

Come on people...show me your lists!!! We are into the last 2 weeks of the schedule!

The Flayed One 07-15-2010 11:10 PM

I'll have to say, I had a really hard time with this just because of the criteria I set for myself as what a true villain is to me. My list wasn't even 20 long.

roshiq 07-16-2010 01:26 AM

Fully agree with Doc. Evil intentions & doings that all matter to be a villain, not the natural instincts for survival. Most of the poor creatures were out there in wrong time & wrong place, that's just might made them that bad.

_____V_____ 07-17-2010 03:14 AM

Received yours, Flayed. Thanks for the list.

Still waiting for plenty more from all the HDC-ians. Come on people!

_____V_____ 07-21-2010 08:51 PM

A big Thanks to Massacre Man for taking some time out and sending in his list.

69 villains shortlisted so far. Hoping to zero in on 31 more from the pending lists which some of you have promised but haven't sent in yet.

That doesn't mean that those who haven't promised and are reading this cannot send me their lists. Come on people! Let me see those lists!

A point to moot - 3 of you listers have sent in Carrie White as a Horror Villain. What is the general consensus on this dubious entry?

I don't see her as a villain, she's the victim of horrific bullying and a brutal mother. They are the villains IMO, not her.

_____V_____ 07-22-2010 07:43 AM

That's how I see it too. Will be interesting to hear Doc's take on Carrie.

Anyone else?

Doc Faustus 07-22-2010 08:16 AM

Carrie's Mother is the villain in this case. A fantastic villain. Add her.
