Ok guys and girls. This show isn't a retelling, origin, or anything like that of Norman Bates. What this show is, is how much trouble can a Mother and her son (sons?) get into in a small town. The show is very stupid now. Norman with his relationships with girls, the crime subplots, all this stuff is away from the best thing about Psycho. The hotel and house. I did laugh when Norman brings the girl back to the hotel. Only a few episodes left. I'm 100% sure it will get worse. But I think the show was already renewed for another season which is shocking.

Yeah it seems that way but I think it'll get back on track to combine a lot of those elements to create a origin story. I wasn't really expecting Hitchcock (or a complete tie in with the original film) so I'm not disappointed in the show so far. I like how the motel is revealing secrets about the town hopefully it'll yield something a bit more interesting by the season's end.

I thought "Bates Motel" was dead in the water after the first two episodes. Calmly abandoned a lot of its "Psycho" roots and was roundly criticized by longtime Horror.com members (see pp. 1-2). Now it's been picked up for another season and this thread is up to its fifth page. I may have to give this show another shot.

I would suggest it. I agree with Elvis Christ. I did not go in watching this thinking it would be like Psycho, but more of using those characters to develop events that led to what happened with Norman. The creators even said it would not be like it thus the major differences but still setting some ground work. I have seen every episode to date and there is a lot more to the story. It may not be everyone's taste, but I like it.

neverending 04-23-2013 04:45 PM

If they were doing that in a way thast was creative and respected the source material. it would be worth watching. As it is, they're just spewing out cliche TV fodder that barely rises to the level of Urkle. Another cynical effort to cash in on classic material while shitting all over it.

Elvis_Christ 04-23-2013 09:39 PM

Last episode was great. Glad they've concluded one of the plotlines and not dragged it out any longer and delved more into Norman being a fruitloop.

That's been the case with the Psycho franchise since 1986. The only thing that's really worth a shit is the first sequel.

Still I find it entertaining enough to kill 45 minutes each week. I don't tend to take TV shows too seriously. Every now and then there's one that's genius but for the most part it's all popcorn for the brain for me. Basically soap operas in different clothing.

I know. I thought so too. It was nice to know that what they uncovered and everything led to that being revealed versus too much into the plot not being explained. And I agree about how you view TV shows as well.

neverending 04-24-2013 09:58 AM

I don't expect anything to be crap, so I guess I'm less willing to consume it.

realdealblues 04-25-2013 04:59 AM

I finally got caught up and was able to watch the Monday's episode last night. After viewing the first 6 episodes I'll say I am enjoying the show quite a bit.

I thought it was going to be something different before it aired but I like the direction the show has gone. I think the show would have been to hard to maintain if it was nothing but Norman. Instead we have the central character of the Bates family and a secondary character of this really strange town where all sorts of strange things are going on.

ImmortalSlasher 04-25-2013 07:36 AM

I guess I called the twist. It doesn't seem like they care about what happened to the Asian girl. Maybe next episode. Only a few more episodes. I won't put up with a second season no matter what happens. It looks like the crazy guy from Justified will show up at the motel.

BAHa! AMAZING!!!

More Than Horror 04-27-2013 06:56 AM

I have only heard about this briefly in passing. I love Psycho and The Bate motel as much as the next guy, but my uneducated prediction is that it will be a failure. (unfortunately) -If nothing else i feel it to be somewhat of a desperate, out dated, attempt and also bad timing for something like this. It is going to have A LOT of competition.

horrorfangirl66 04-30-2013 07:17 AM

Interesting tie in to original aspects of Norman from last night's episode: Warning: Spoilers below in white ink highlight to view:

After Bradley made him upset he began talking like he was his mother and he looked like he was going to kill someone. Another thing was when the dog was hit he said Emma's dad could take care of it, and her dad is a taxidermist.

ImmortalSlasher 04-30-2013 05:00 PM

Ok. I got the spoiler thing again thanks to horrorfangirl66. Some of your points are in my spoiler too.

Now, the recent episode. The bad show continues to get worse. SPOILERS!!!

First off, still no one cares about the fate of the Asian girl. I think Norman might have mentioned that the crooked cop killed her. But I can't be sure. I guess if she's dead they just left the body in the forest.

The Bates family doesn't get a moment of pause. Of course the main guy most likely responsible for the human Asian sex ring actually shows up. And expects to continue under the motel's new ownership! How much trouble happens in this town???

Then of course we have the growing soap opera with Norman. Of course his half brother will "hook up" with the popular girl. Gosh, I hate that term "hook up." It's a stupid vague term which could mean any number of things. Anyway, of course the popular girl doesn't think she's slutty or anything. It's business as usual. The show tried to trick us and make us think Norman would actually kill the popular girl. But the show is no where near that dark and I knew it wouldn't happen.

The last part with the taxidermy thing was foreshadowed early in the season. I wasn't surprised they used it again.

I really have no clue where this show is going. I don't think the writers do either. They were given a second season so I assume at the end of this season the current problem at the motel will be wrapped up or it will be a cliffhanger for next season. That will give the writers a chance to come up with more criminal activity that goes on in the town.

ImmortalSlasher 05-23-2013 05:55 PM

I guess people here gave up on the show. It's just a stupid soap opera at this point. I thought they might have the guts to have one character be the main criminal boss of the town but they seemed to back away from that. Suffice to say, I won't be watching this next season. The ending twist was dumb and far too soon. And will be explained away by the dumb secret that was dropped earlier in the episode.

Elvis_Christ 05-28-2013 04:54 AM

Pretty non event season closer. I can see it getting better next season now that Norman is basically completely losing his shit. It was an uneven show for the most part but I didn't mind it and will stick with it.
