I just go to anything that looks promising, and as for the oscar nominees I see them because I figure they have to be at least mildly interesting and since I enjoy all genres of film I usually end up at least enjoying the first viewing.

42ndStreetFreak 02-08-2005 04:39 AM

We have to travel to the nearest cinema by bus (no car) and when you add in drinks/snacks and the tickets it comes to about Ģ20 at least ($37) for my Wife and myself to go the cinema.
For that cost I simply don't go to see many things.

that's understandable, for the moment I usually have a decent amount of money that I can blow on whatever but I'm sure that'll change after I graduate.

hmmm as a clone I think its ok...but that nest in the last part of the film was really bad :(

Vodstok 02-08-2005 05:09 AM

The iNvasion of the Body Snatchers remake.. Just what the world needs, another horror movie with Veronica Cartwright crying for the last hour....

(she did the same thing in Alien)

taylorsmommy 02-08-2005 05:21 AM

Last night I watched "Lathe of Heaven" with Lukas Haas, James Caan, Lisa Bonet, David Straithairn. What a boring movie! I definitely do not recommend it.

Vodstok 02-08-2005 05:25 AM

Most recently watched movie for me:
The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer.

It was a prequal to Rose Red. it was, okay. However, not much of it would make sense without seeing rose red, and then there were so many inconsistancies between the two movie versions that it was just frustrating. However, they did have the same woman play Zuccini or whatever her name wa sin both movies (the handmaiden who gets her ass beat when the the little girl disappears)

GREAT final scene though.

Vodstok 02-08-2005 07:36 AM

Very effective. i still wanted to slap Donald and Veronica by the end of it, but definately a great twist, and a big change from the original.

i prefer the sutherland one, then the MCcarthy one (origional), then the Abel Ferrara version last.

There were things in the 1978 version that i found creepier than the origional. In some cases - colour does add more atmosphere.
(the scenes at the pod growing facilities ...especially)

Wasnīt it also the thing the aliens screamed that was more frightening in the 78 version.

Wasnīt the 78s "NOOOOOOOB"!!! more scary than "Become one of us" or what the hell the line was in the first one..?

I thought it was a pile of poop, but i hated "Resurrection" even more.

Now, i know that iīm gonna be in trouble for saying this, but i really donīt see anything special about the Halloween serial? Iīve only seen the first and the 2 last ones.

Here is some questions:

1. Why is it, that the first Halloween movie got 5 out of 5 stars in Mick Martinīs "video and movie guide" and the first "Friday the 13." only got around 3 stars?

2. Is it because "Halloween" started the whole slasher theme?

3. What was so special about that story that itīs a classic now?

I know iīm not talking or writing like Shakespeare, but Freak, you are welcome to answer this one if you like.;)

Peace

EXTR3MIST 02-08-2005 01:01 PM

1. Because Mick Martin liked Halloween more than Friday the 13th - reviewers' opinions are always just that, but I would not listen to the likes of Martin for any reliable or informed critique on horror films: he hasn't got a fucking clue.

2. Halloween didn't start the whole slasher/bodycount theme - this is generally credited to Mario Bava's Bay of Blood (aka Twitch of the Death Nerve) 8 years earlier in 1971. Halloween did bring the genre to mainstream audiences, though.

3. Halloween has a lot of classic-making virtues, not least down to its simple hook (a faceless, indestructable bogeyman returns home to kill teenagers - not common at the time), John Carpenter's unusual and devastatingly effecting framing techniques (complimented by Ray Stella's steadicam work) and of course his unforgettable soundtrack.

Back in 1979, teens-in-peril did not need to be particularly attractive or hip, and films like this were made devoid of the humour and clever knowingness that plagues them today.

Black Christmas was even before halloween (1974)
but as it was a Canadian film, no one saw it.

it doesnt stand the test of time like Halloween but i remember it being a pretty scary film back then.

42ndStreetFreak 02-08-2005 01:24 PM

And "Silent Night . Bloody Night" was released before "Black Christmas".

As for "Halloween"...well it got a better rating than "Friday" because it's a better film than "Friday".
Though "Halloween" itself is not as effective now as it once was i think.

EXTR3MIST 02-08-2005 01:24 PM

No-one bothers to see anything from Canada, dude!

Black Christmas is a top film.

usually there is a good reason for that ...
usually little low budget 'art films' too topical to appeal to anyone anywhere else.

there are a couple of exceptions ... and we have/had a lot of talent up here .. but it usually goes south - where the money is.

Film is not one of the arts supported up here - worth a damn.

EXTR3MIST 02-08-2005 02:01 PM

Starship Troopers again - seriously excellent, the only thing that would make those bugs tougher is acid-for-blood.

Speaking of Aliens, there are more than a few similar scenes between these two films:-

* The spectacular bodies-ripping-in-half stunts (remember Bishop?)

* The "Oh you want some? You want some more motherfucker!?" losing it bits just before a trooper/marine is overpowered by the bugs/aliens

* ...and some other aspects, which I've bloody forgotten already.

well .. the military itself ...being involved. as opposed to a bunch of 'space miners' or something.

EXTR3MIST 02-08-2005 02:06 PM

Yeah similar in theme to an extent, but there were more specific scenes perhaps Verhoeven deliberately attributed to Aliens.

If I don't write these things down at the time, I forget.

Hooray for not being anal!

i just read a biography on Verhoeven .. i dont believe aliens was mentioned...but he openly admits to pulling a lot of influence from other films ..so its quite possible.

I always liked this film too .. great effects, outstanding gore..

I think there are talks of a 3 & 4 in the works .. possibly with Casper's involvement.

EXTR3MIST 02-08-2005 02:24 PM

And didn't the director keep a remarkably straight face throughout the whole thing!

It's obvious his handsome, vaccuous stars took it all very seriously (perhaps someone showed them Heinlein's book, first? Snigger!) which makes Verhoeven's swipe on American imperialism and commercialism all the more satisfying here.

no where as much as in RoboCop though ...
he had a lot more fun with that movie.

he also gave a kick with showgirls but ....

Did you know up to that point at least .. Verhoeven was the first director to accept his own Golden Turkey award ?

EXTR3MIST 02-08-2005 02:32 PM

Good for him - he is one of the ballsiest filmakers in Hollywood, and that's always going to upset some people.

Basic Instinct, RoboCop and Total Recall made the adventurous Showgirls possible, then Starship Troopers gave another two fingers up to the establishment.

I read in an interview with him once, on Showgirls: "I like tits & ass... mostly, ass."

urgeok 02-08-2005 02:41 PM

he wanted to succeed in america where so many european filmmakers failed (commercially).
He knew he had to adjust and he did .. but without sacrificing his style.

I forgot he did Hollow Man ... been a long while since then ..

There has been talk about a Basic Instinct sequel ..
