But, I'd be willing to change my mind if someone explained it coherently.

The "murderer" and the short haired blonde chick were one and the same. Split personality type deal...she was severely fucked in the head I guess. She dissasociated the other "persona" from herself so much that he appeared even to her in some scenes (the shop...etc...the vehicles), SHE clearly had no idea it was happening. At the end to "let us in", they had her kill off the male character, to no REAL avail...as the personality was still there in the end, it just became evident to the viewer that it was her all along.
It's not without it's plotholes though, like I said before, there's the head in the van thing...and another one I thought of - which vehicle really existed?
I mean, perhaps the first scene with the other girl and her in the car didn't actually happen? So that may explain the van bit at the beggining, assuming she fabricated meeting the family and all, the whole thing could've just been recollection of past experiences with a person that rejected her, that she'd become obsessed with?
I think that's what I'll stick to as my theory.
It explains the vehicle, how they appeared to be in the car at the same time (it was a fantasy), the male character with all his hatred, and just how far the split personality thing happened...just my take.
