It's a tear jerker? Hmmm.... I can't say that I've ever seen a movie that actually made me cry (Except Old Yeller when I was reaaly, really young. I was like "Why'd they have to kill the dog?" )

As for other good downer movies, I would point you guys in the direction of Kids, Trainspotting, and Storytelling. All very fucked up. All quite depressing. All excellent movies.

I guess if this is a chick flick that is meant to induce crying then it doesnt sound quite as cool as I initially thought, but if it's not a chick flick and just about a kid with a really shitty life that you keep hoping something good will happen to, but it never does... Then it sounds cool.

trainspotting - i never thought of that movie as a downer despite the subject material because of the way it was presented .. it never got into the heavy handed drama - it managed to stay light no matter what .. i think thats what made it unique ..

i dont like relentless painful dramas if their only reason for existence is to force your emotional hand ... thats just manipulation for the sake of itself.

on the other hand if the emotional impact is a result of brilliant performances with a poignant storyline that is actually meaningful... then i'm all for it.

all of us experience pain and loss in our lives from time to time and while some folks would rather not deal with it on screen (understandable) others take comfort in knowing that their experiences have been shared and understood by someone else 'out there'

cinematic empathy if you will ..

rehab

there is no movie that could be as bad as movies they show in rehab!!! rehab movies are so god damn bad. i was all like, we should watch fear and loathing in las vegas so we can learn more of the dangers in drug use. BUT, NNOOOOOOOO! we had to watch some awful movie with keanu "should never have played in dracula" reaves and andy grifith. and lots of horrible slightly christain documentaries on the dangers of marijuana and alcohol. i am like what about the dangers of coke and meth or mushrooms and acid! haha so for real, go to rehab if you want to see some awful movies. i would have killed to see old yeller or even revenge of the zombies. other than that, rehab gets two thumbs up.

throw in requiem for a dream and you have a list of movies i do not like because of various reasons. from the outside they are all good movies in their own, but when you have lived that lifestyle, they are fucking horrible. when you are free of girls having sex for drugs, you don't want to see it in a movie. or trainspotting, i lost a really good friend to heroin, so i hate hearing people say "oh trainspotting is great, i want to shoot up" (not that you are saying that, i have just heard lots of people talk like that)... ummm so yeah, i am not a big fan of the drug lifestyle movies. movie empathy can go either way. like Traffic was a well done movie, but again it fits the category of movies i don't want to watch.

i lived a scarface like lifestyle for a bit... and i think thats the only movie i would ever watch again in that category of drug film.

I'm sorry to agree, because I really wanted it to be good, but all the stylistic "experimentation" was just that, and I thought this one blew really hard.

There are so many movies that I hated it's hard to list them. Titanic is probably at the top of my list. I went two full years without seeing that piece of shit, and then broke my vow and watched it with a friend. TERRIBLE.

Maybe it's because Leo DeCrap-rio was in it or maybe it was because Celine Dion sang the theme. Point is, I can't believe so many people paid to see this movie.
