I do it by when a film's "wider release" happens -- wide theatrical, VOD, or US DVD. Most bloggers and horror news outlets group it that way for practical purposes.

I remember seeing the trailer last year, but I don't remember it getting a wide theatrical release, and it's definitely just recently hit VOD. Bottom line, I don't think anyone really saw last year. I read dozens of end-of-2014 lists (and not just "best of"), and it wasn't on any of them. I could be wrong though, maybe I just totally missed it.

It came out April 25th.

[Edit] Apparently it did get a US DVD release last year. Hmm, it sure got zero buzz, and wasn't even on the radar until VOD, which is weird considering its distributor. I suppose technically I should move it to the 2014 list, but I'm still betting it will be written about more at the end of 2015 than it was end of 2014.

I remember seeing a poster for it in theatres last year, and there was a trailer for it before Oculus. Tbh I don't think it'll ever get any sort of recognition. I also remember seeing the DVD in my amazon recommendations all last year.

That settles it then. I'll move it to 2014.
