Superman Returns.

Its amazing how an open mind can influence the point-of-view of watching a movie without being too judgemental. We all thought Bryan Singer did a boo-boo by leaving X-Men 3 for this, but those who have seen it have to admit...Singer's special touch for Superman was very savoring and satisfying.

Yes, it has plenty of throwbacks to the original by Richard Donner (including a cameo by Marlon Brando's "image") and the background score is almost totally John Williams, but still Singer manages to make Returns all his own.

The characterisation is very decent, but I thought Spacey was over-doing a bit in some sequences. Brandon Routh was good (doing remarkably well because he does have to fill rather large shoes left by Christopher Reeve), and Kate Bosworth manages to make Lois Lane believable in parts. Spacey was strong...almost over-strong. I liked James Marsden's Richard White a lot, because he makes a perfect little sidecar to Supe's emotional and jaw-dropping histrionics. My only complaint - the Lex Luthor bashing is becoming a bit too worn out by now...let's see Supe take on someone (or something) else for a welcome change.

Anyone who thinks this movie was disappointing because it didnt have loads of action (ala X-Men) or didnt have the pace...I have a piece of advice. Watch it again, carefully, from beginning till end...and after the end credits start to roll out...let the whole experience sink in. Trust me, you will change your tune and opinion about Returns.

I had to turn it off. There's a point when something becomes so boring that it forces you into a coma, and i'm not ready for that. My video on Ebola was better than this. The only reason I rented it was because it was on that one compilation in general. Terrible

finish it. turns into an unrelenting gore drenched bloodbath 2 3rds through.

Big Bad Wolf........... Started out corny Then got pretty good!

jenna26 03-10-2008 09:39 AM

Sublime ~ this movie felt a lot longer than it really was. I was so completely bored, I'm surprised we made it through it honestly. Some good ideas there I think.....but it was heavy handed, and just so....dull.

Yep, agreed. There really wasn't an abandonment of King's ending...just an extension. Probably my favorite horror movie of the year.

The Days of Wine and Roses (1962)

WOW. Powerful stuff. Jack Lemmon truly was one of the very greatest method actors to ever grace the silver screen. Lee Remick is also fantastic in what is probably her best career role. This is a truly scary movie.

Yeh its got the trashy as fuck title that makes most people think that but its really well done. I dig how a bunch of the characters names are old school horror icons....

You should check out Blood Diner not as slick (Tri-Star were to pussy to pick it up probably) but in the similar vein and a really cool 80s HG Lewis homage.

Got way to drunk to bother watching shit tonight might watch the Buffalo 66 DVD I picked up now I'm getting sleepy and see if I still dig that flick cuz its been awhile. Hopefully it still kills and doesn't suck as bad as The Brown Bunny.

I just watched this too. I'd say 9 out of 10.

I also watched Cloverfield. I dunno, it was on a site called Youku, that loaded it really slow and had terrible quality. It is really looks that shitty, I'd give it a lower score, but it was one of the best disaster/monster flicks since Aliens. 8 out of 10.

AuroraBorealis 03-11-2008 06:08 PM

I'm watching Krull right now.
I've always liked it, even if it is a bit cheesetastic.

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974)

_____V_____ 03-11-2008 08:11 PM

Guyver.

Cheese galore!

Some really overblown, misfitting and corny monster suits, plenty of bad acting, hilariously choreographed action sequences best suited for a Sat afternoon sitcom and some really terrible gore...all this from the brain of Brian Yuzna no less.

Yet, you gotta love it...because its one of those soo-bad-its-decent movies, and because for the entire length of the movie I had a huge smile on my face.:D

The Girl Who Knew Too Much.

With all the giallo talk in HDC recently, I dug out my Mario Bava Collection Vol 1 and treated myself to this beauty. Even after what...30-35 years of its release, its still an excellent visual treat.

Its a pretty impressive early Bava giallo, with all the traditional murder mystery angle. Hardcore fans might be a tad disappointed with the toned down gorific brutality and sexuality, but you have to admire Bava's brilliance in deftly handling the finer aspects of gialli film-making - the background score, the darkly tinted visuals, the perfect creepy settings...and the atmosphere. You will forget for a sec that its totally b/w, and just sit back and admire the genius of Bava, as he goes about this almost Hitchcock-ian tribute with the perfect ease of a master at work.

Heck...I have to agree with Elvis and admit that, between Argento and Bava, Bava definitely holds a slight edge.
