Villain, what's your favorite Laymon novel? Wizard, who are your favorite authors?

wizard of gore 01-12-2012 10:03 AM

so many horror authors iv yet to discover, but so far iv liked jack ketchum, laymon, clive barker (horror novels mainly)lovecraft.edgar allen poe,a few john sauls
joe hill, tim lebbon iv only read short storys but they seem really good.

Bob Gray 01-12-2012 12:02 PM

Tim Lebbon is the only one of those I haven't read yet but I hear great things. I own one of his books, The Everlasting, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

If you're interested, here is a list of authors that I have read (not including the ones you have already mentioned) and found enjoyable:

Gord Rollo (his book, Crimson, is one of the scariest books I've read)
John Skipp & Craig Spector (their novel, The Scream, is one of the most original horror novels I've read)
Charles L. Grant
Dan Simmons (one of the best writers I've read in a while and is in my top five favorite authors)
Robert Bloch
Ambrose Bierce
Robert W. Chambers
August Derleth (a close friend of Lovecraft and wrote part of the Cthulhu Mythos)
John Everson
Dennis Etchison
John Farris
James Herbert
Brian Keene (one of my top five favorites)
Brian Lumley
T.E.D. Klein
Bentley Little (his novel The Return is one of the scariest books I've read)
Robert McCammon
Jonathan Maberry
Mark Morris
Arthur Machen
Oliver Onions
Bryan Smith
F. Paul Wilson
T.M. Wright

wizard of gore 01-12-2012 01:54 PM

wow you have read all those authors!iv been wasting my time reading stephen king and dean koonts books to long, spose its just there soo available
iv just read "the best of the best mammoth book of new" horror which introduced me to a hole lot of new authors as well, which had a few in that list.
iv got soo many to discover but it takes a while, a book aint like watching a quick flick
i just finished a james herbert"the ghost of sleath"
oh and iv his novel 48 in the same volume but i think i wanna try the ramsey campell , neil gaimen books first and try straub again

Bob Gray 01-12-2012 02:28 PM

Seriously though, check out Dan Simmons Summer of Night, if you like King's It you'll probably like this one.

Straub's Ghost Story is also similar to It. Or I should say It is similar to Ghost Story.

Didn't think they were similar at all, now Floating Dragon was very similar. It had a character in it nicknamed "The Dragon" who definitely reminded me of Pennywise and he murdered children. There was a house in it that was similar to the house on Neibolt Street in that it was like a funhouse. Just like The Losers, there was a group of people that had to join together to fight the Dragon.

Thanks. I've read all those by Laymon. Really liked them except The Woods are Dark. I hated that one. The Traveling Vampire Show is one of my favorite books and my favorite by him. You should check out Savage, Island, Funland, In The Dark....I could go on and on. The only other one i havent liked by him so far is Resurrection Dreams

Thanks Doc. Nice to see you again.

It's funny. That's the book of his i like the least. Not bad though. Strange Magic though is perfect.

I have that sitting on my shelf. Gonna have to get to it soon.

Bob Gray 01-12-2012 04:12 PM

I liked Strange Magic, just not as much as Crimson, I haven't read Jigsaw Man yet.

The Villain 01-12-2012 04:13 PM

Jigsaw man freaked me out.

Bob Gray 01-12-2012 04:17 PM

Yeah, I've heard it is great. I'll get to it soon, I like to give myself time in-between books of good authors. It also gives me the chance to read new writers.

The Villain 01-12-2012 04:21 PM

Yeah that's a good idea. I read Rollo's Valley of The Scarecrow a little while ago. Not his best but a fun book.

Bob Gray 01-12-2012 04:24 PM

Don't have that one yet, still getting use to the idea that you can only buy some writers works online now. I really like going to a book store to find my treasures, it's something about the smell of the books, weird I know. lol

The Villain 01-12-2012 04:44 PM

Actually i feel the same way but i also like buying things online so it works out.

Bob Gray 01-12-2012 04:49 PM

I'm getting use to the idea, don't have a choice really, lol.

Eh, both had characters who thought they had defeated an evil force when they were younger (Although it is kind of inadvertent in Ghost Story), only to have that same evil come back when they were older. Both also have a small town under "siege" by that same evil.

Bob Gray 01-12-2012 06:01 PM

I see what you're getting at, it just didn't remind ME of IT, you have a viable point though. Have you read Floating Dragon yet, if not, check it out and you'll see what I'm talking about.

It is on my to read list, and I have a copy sitting right on my desk.:)

Got Jigsaw Man for Christmas. It looks like a hell of a ride. If that's your thing, check out the stuff Deadite Press puts out. Edward Lee, Nate Southard, Wrath James White.

I have several novels by Ed Lee and a couple by Wrath James White but I've never heard of Nate Southard, thanks for the tip.

You're welcome. It's a great operation that picked up a lot of authors that the end of Leisure left stranded.

Not well. Had some pretty bad writer's block. Haven't been able to write anything. Still editing the last novel i finished.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the whole Leisure to Deadite move. A lot of great writers got screwed by Leisure. I just wish I could get the Deadite books in stores.

Bob Gray 01-13-2012 10:36 PM

I just finished Joe R. Lansdale's The Nightrunners and I can say that I am a fan. It was splatterpunk goodness at its best. The best part was Brian's dream about The God of the Razor. It definitely had its gory parts but even if you're not a fan of gore, his descriptive writing and the fact that he doesn't waste any time moving the story along makes this worth the time.

The Villain 01-14-2012 08:16 AM

Finished Tequila's Sunrise by Brian Keene. A great little fable that contains a lot of his mythos. Fans of his books will really like this. The short stories in it aren't bad either but not as good as the main story.

Just started reading The Neighborhood by Kelli Owen

Bob Gray 01-14-2012 01:11 PM

I've switched over to fantasy at the moment, Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind. So far it has been everything I've been told it was. His writing is poetic and the story is reeling me in.

Doc Faustus 01-14-2012 06:17 PM

Been reading some of the stories I hadn't gotten around to yet in The Book of Cthulhu.

That's always a struggle in the small press world. Barnes and Noble doesn't stock POD books.

neverending 01-14-2012 10:37 PM

My current busstop book is Watchers by Dean Koontz. Only about 30 pages in, but it's a smooth read so far. It's still setting things up, introducing a lot of characters, some are more interesting than others. So far.

Never read the book but after watching the movie I thought it would've worked better as a book. Thinking about it I've never read a Koontz book. They've just never screamed out "read me" to me.

It's my first Koontz book as well. It was in the box of books Rayne sent me, so I figured I'd give it a go. Never seen the movie so this will all be new to me. So far I think he does have a good eye for detail and an insight into human motivations.

Bob Gray 01-15-2012 05:37 AM

I've read several of Koontz's novels, some were excellent, some were just okay but all were enjoyable reads. My favorites of his that I've read are Phantoms, Watchers, and The Door to December.

The Villain 01-15-2012 06:38 AM

My first and only Koontz book was Tick Tock which i think was a bad choice. From what i gathered from the afterword, he wrote it with a different style and combined horror with screwball comedy which i didnt feel work. I didnt like the book very much and havent been interested in returning to him but like NE, i got one of his books from Raynes Book Box so maybe after i read that, i'll change my opinion on him.

iSeymore 01-15-2012 08:34 AM

Finished Gears of War: Coalition's End by Karen Traviss, very epic, indeed. Also finished reading The Walking Dead volume 2: Miles Behind Us, and The Walking Dead volume 3: Safety Behind Bars, both very sick and twisted graphic novels, I enjoy the classic image comics workmanship, along with the B&W artwork. Makes things a lot more intriguing, I suppose.

I first read The Walking Dead volume 1: Days Gone Bye back in August or September, before I ever watched the hit AMC television series with the same name, the series is amazing, got me into the graphic novel series a lot more. :)

Sirenz 01-15-2012 01:08 PM

I just started reading Forever Odd by Dean Koontz but realized that it was the second book in a series, so I'm going to go back and read Odd Thomas first when I get a chance. I'm about to start reading World War Z.

wizard of gore 01-15-2012 07:34 PM

i personally thought odd thomas was average so didnt carry on the series.kinda seemed like a book meant for teenages or something i dunno.

Really enjoyed Phantoms and Watchers but haven't read The Door To December-my fave Koontz book overall is Lightning. I agree some of his books were just OK-I didn't hate them or anything but were not very special but he has some gems like above. I find his books to be easy reads rather than challenging reads so works well when in that mood.
