And "Silent Night . Bloody Night" was released before "Black Christmas".


As for "Halloween"...well it got a better rating than "Friday" because it's a better film than "Friday".
Though "Halloween" itself is not as effective now as it once was i think.

No-one bothers to see anything from Canada, dude!

Black Christmas is a top film.

usually there is a good reason for that ...
usually little low budget 'art films' too topical to appeal to anyone anywhere else.


there are a couple of exceptions ... and we have/had a lot of talent up here .. but it usually goes south - where the money is.

Film is not one of the arts supported up here - worth a damn.

Starship Troopers again - seriously excellent, the only thing that would make those bugs tougher is acid-for-blood.

Speaking of Aliens, there are more than a few similar scenes between these two films:-

* The spectacular bodies-ripping-in-half stunts (remember Bishop?)

* The "Oh you want some? You want some more motherfucker!?" losing it bits just before a trooper/marine is overpowered by the bugs/aliens

* ...and some other aspects, which I've bloody forgotten already.

Yeah similar in theme to an extent, but there were more specific scenes perhaps Verhoeven deliberately attributed to Aliens.

If I don't write these things down at the time, I forget.

i just read a biography on Verhoeven .. i dont believe aliens was mentioned...but he openly admits to pulling a lot of influence from other films ..so its quite possible.

I always liked this film too .. great effects, outstanding gore..

I think there are talks of a 3 & 4 in the works .. possibly with Casper's involvement.

And didn't the director keep a remarkably straight face throughout the whole thing!

It's obvious his handsome, vaccuous stars took it all very seriously (perhaps someone showed them Heinlein's book, first? Snigger!) which makes Verhoeven's swipe on American imperialism and commercialism all the more satisfying here.

no where as much as in RoboCop though ...
he had a lot more fun with that movie.

he also gave a kick with showgirls but ....

Did you know up to that point at least .. Verhoeven was the first director to accept his own Golden Turkey award ?

Good for him - he is one of the ballsiest filmakers in Hollywood, and that's always going to upset some people.

Basic Instinct, RoboCop and Total Recall made the adventurous Showgirls possible, then Starship Troopers gave another two fingers up to the establishment.

I read in an interview with him once, on Showgirls: "I like tits & ass... mostly, ass."
