And Judge Doc Faustus has decided to AWARD you TOO!!

Finalist Zero, you WIN a box of 10 cartridges for your M16 Machine Gun!!

Zero 05-20-2008 08:39 AM

damn - only 8/10 - should have gone with Freudian psycho babble about castration and repressed desire to re-enter the womb

should have known Faustus was a Lacanian!

Careful.

The Judge is still watching this thread, and if he is annoyed...he just might pop a few rounds into your furry butt. :D

_____V_____ 05-20-2008 08:42 AM

Who will be the next Finalist to choose the envelope remains to be seen...since Disease, Psycom5K, Despare and Posher778, all are offline.

Battle Royale will take a break till any one of them are online and PM me their choice of envelope.

Don't you feel that Lacan basicly just ripped off Freud and expounded upon his teachings/beliefs/ideas?

But, I'm kinda biased...I like to mix some Freud with some Jung...At least Jung had his own ideas...

I'm just saying

Maybe we should start a separate thread about this...It may be the ONLY subject that hasn't been discussed here :)

_____V_____ 05-20-2008 08:50 AM

The second choice has been made.

Finalist DESPARE has chosen.

Judge Hammerfan's query to Despare - "The Exorcist is the one movie in the world that STILL scares the crap out of me. I've heard a lot of the "younger" folks here say it's a stupid movie. Why do you think it has no effect on them??"

You have 1 hour to think over your answer, and post it in this thread accordingly, Despare.

Your answer will be then analyzed and awarded points on a scale of 0-10 by the Judge, who will then proceed to decide if you will incur any sort of punishment OR get any sort of reward for it.

Good luck...think it over carefully, and then reply your answer IN THIS THREAD!

FAILURE TO ANSWER WITHIN THE NEXT HOUR WILL INCUR JUDGE HAMMERFAN'S WRATH AND YOU WILL BE RECEIVING A BRUTAL PUNISHMENT FROM HER!!

Nah, I'd just have him do nude yoga and show Lucy her new "playtoys". (Lucy's my cat and she DOES have her claws!)

"The Exorcist is the one movie in the world that STILL scares the crap out of me. I've heard a lot of the "younger" folks here say it's a stupid movie. Why do you think it has no effect on them??"

The Exorcist manages to be both intellectually terrifying and visually assaulting to the viewer. It’s hard to think that the demonic possession of a young child and watching her slide further and further away from the possibility of savior can have no effect on even a seasoned viewer of horror. Today it seems that horror has moved in a different direction. Now on the silver screen we see visions of torture, maiming, and murder which are far easier to identify with than possession. I think for a lot of viewers, especially the younger ones, it’s more terrifying to imagine a psycho hunting you down and slitting your throat because it’s easier to imagine. You don’t have to contemplate the existence of a higher power or forces that can’t been seen or heard but can readily take us over and cause our destruction when you’re watching a hillbilly remove the head of an unfortunate hiker. I think that “younger folk” simply desire an evil that’s more tactile, something that they can see in their mind’s eye stalking them to their car after leaving the theater. Another possible answer is the rush you get from plotting in your head how to deal with a villain. We’ve all done it haven’t we? Who hasn’t watched Night of the Living Dead and thought about how they would dispatch with zombies? Who hasn’t watched a horror film and thought about how a character made a stupid move and he or she could have survived had she done something else? With The Exorcist you lose that rush, most people can’t imagine battling a demon much less that Devil himself (although I’m sure it was Pazuzu and not Satan). I can’t answer for all the youngsters out there as I’m sure some of them just didn’t like the story or felt that the effects were dated. I can however venture a guess which is what I’ve done, and it was quite a chore to do so. I can’t imagine anybody not being shaken to the very core by this masterpiece.

Would be a good discussion I'm sure, especially for those of us who hate on Freud. I wouldn't say I'm as bad as Popper but I'm really not a fan.

Very good answer, Des.

Please do NOT edit it until Judge Hammerfan has a chance to read, evaluate and award her points.

Um, Avi? I already sent you my verdict.

_____V_____ 05-20-2008 09:33 AM

Yes you did, esteemed Judge.

Judge Hammerfan has declared her verdict!!

Finalist Despare, you have been awarded...

...09 POINTS out of a possible 10!! Excellent!

You have also been rewarded by Judge Hammerfan. And your award is...

A ROCKET LAUNCHER WITH 2 ROCKETS LOADED IN IT!!

Way to go, Despare.

You can stand aside now. The third finalist, Psycom5K, is ready with his choice...

Despare 05-20-2008 09:35 AM

Woohoo, nice question Hammerfan, I didn't want to tell you that before judging though, lest I be called a suck-up. :)

Rayne 05-20-2008 09:35 AM

@ Despare: Now that Hammerfan has made her verdict...I'm gonna say that I think you left out one (somewhat important) factor.

It has to do with desensitization...Comparing the time periods and exposure between the generations

Despare 05-20-2008 09:38 AM

Very true but I think that desensitization is tough to include because the market hasn't been saturated with such films. Even the later Exorcist films didn't have the impact and to be honest, even though I've watched thousands of horror films, The Exorcist STILL chills me in a way different from most horror. I was thinking that our societies concept and views of religion could have had more of impact that desensitization.

I agree with you, but I think it could have been added as an 'also'

I realize that there aren't really a huge amount of movies specifically about demon possession (as I was trying to think of as many as I could just now), but as for horror in general, I think that much of what this generation has been exposed to is far more intense or 'shocking' than anything the previous generations have seen...Which would give this generation more of a 'been there, done that, not too impressed' vibe.

Know what I mean?

And that's why I gave you such a high score. I completely agree with you. I've watched several possession movies since The Exorcist, and none of them has had the impact on me that The Exorcist did.

I have a different view. The movies that come out today (with a few exceptions) are what I call "slice-n-dice". They hold no interest for me whatsoever. I don't find it scary at all. If I want to see gore, I'll watch Discovery Health Channel. The things that really scare me are monsters, ghosts, the things you can't see, etc.

I don't know, maybe it's because I'm older? Who knows. Maybe just a different opinion.

There is NOTHING like it in my opinion.
