The ALien movies

I cant believe there isnt more discussion about these around here.... Alien is basically what got me started with horror.

Now, I know Ressurection was shit ( some people may nbot agree, but i was really disappointed with it...)

But even 3 is a good movie, even a good Alien Movie.

But Alien was the best, as far as horror goes. Everythign about it is classic: Claustrophobia. People dying 1 by 1... It was a classic "Haunted House" movie.

Aliens is the first true and really good "Sci-fi/horror/action" movie. It is also about the only good one in existance. Just like Alien, it has characters that have themselves become classics.

Alien 3. I can understand why this one wasnt popular. Hicks was a great character, as was Newt. It sucks trhta they killed them off-screen andf rather pointlessly. Laziness on the writer's part, i guess. I canunderstand not having newt back. by the time Alien 3 came out, Carrie Henn was well into her teens. But even Hicks? CMON!!

Despite that, it is a good movie. Charles Dance and Charles S Dutton are great. It brought back the indiviudual horror of the original. Although it had action, it wasnt an action movie, and it relied heavily on Atmosphere.

And i cant help but love David Fincher. Anyone who puts Gwenyth Paltrow's head in a box (before she was even well known) is okay in my book.

Then there is ressurection........ So, they guy who wrote "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" writes an Alien movie. It is directed by the guy who did "City of Lost Children", stars Ripley, even though she is dead, and a famous Kleptomaniac, and the very talented likes of Ron Perlman and Michael Wincot. Not to mention Dan hedaya and Brad Douriff. Yet despite the laundry list of talented people involved, it sucked. And it was written by Joss "Buffy" Whedon, who tried to badmouth the movie, even though it is largely his fault it sucked.... I wonder if he blames the demise of Firefly on someone else as well?

The_Return 01-27-2005 08:56 AM

Ive seen the 1st two, they are amazing

I really need to see the rest....

Vodstok 01-27-2005 09:07 AM

See 3 to enjoy it, see 4 out of curiosity, and dont say i didnt warn you if you hate it.

For a sci-fi action movie, its not bad, but as an Alien movie, it is shit.

urgeok 01-27-2005 09:26 AM

i'll put my nuts on a plate and say .. that i found a lot to like about it ...
I like the director .. i like the leads ..
i liked the idea of the aliens turning on each other to burn their way out of the cell ..

i think #3 was my least favorite - but i still liked it too ...

Tat2 01-27-2005 02:54 PM

My favorite was Alien. I like the others, even Ressurection, although not as much as the others (I haven't seen AVP yet).

The original had everything going for it. An excellent story line, great atmosphere and lighting, edge of your seat suspense, unbelievable special effects for the time, H.R. Geiger art and design, casted perfectly, and Segorney Weaver in her underwear! What more could a guy want in a horror movie? Well, besides weaver bare-assed naked...of course. :D

Elvis_Christ 01-27-2005 04:46 PM

I've enjoyed all of the so far but I haven't seen Alien Vs Predator yet but from what I've heard it's shit but I'll check it out and make up my own mind I guess.

phantomstranger 01-27-2005 05:04 PM

The first two are brilliant, the third one I personally did not like and the fourth, well the least said the better and I am probably the only one here who liked "Alien Vs Predator"

majorbludd 01-30-2005 07:37 AM

alien vs predator pretty much sucked...the story, the cast, however the action rips, little to no cgi, all robots and costumes...

EXTR3MIST 01-30-2005 07:50 AM

Are you saying little to no CGI was a problem here, or a virtue?

urgeok 01-30-2005 08:56 AM

a virtue i believe... hopefully

EXTR3MIST 01-30-2005 09:02 AM

Once CGI was first relied on in Alien3 the creatures started to lose their menace.

A shame, because the rest of the movie is very effective in places - I'm a huge fan of David Fincher.

urgeok 01-30-2005 09:04 AM

cgi has its place ... i dont mind when its been used to give us something that would be impossible otherwide ..that is essential to the movie
but obviously too many films are using it in place of imagination and creativity - forgetting the 'less is more' rule ..

EXTR3MIST 01-30-2005 09:11 AM

It's fine in space and even dinosaur epics, but now lazy producers are insisting on using cheap D-grade imagery for all sorts of things which could easily be made more effective with a bit of latex.

Now they've started throwing in CGI-blood splashes of all things (Blade etc), it actually offends my eye - I can spot it a mile off.

the WORST example i've seen which ruined an otherwise fine film .. was the Zaitochi remake ... i couldnt believe it ...
CGI blood in a samurai movie ! its beyond belief !

EXTR3MIST 01-30-2005 09:17 AM

Likes of the tabloid press keep threatening that one day, all actors will be CGI-generated and thus killing off any need for human thesps.

If that's the case, I hope they hurry up and finish the CGI-Ben Affleck (maybe they can tailor that smug, constipated look off his bastard face).

IDrinkYourBlood 01-30-2005 09:31 AM

Is Alien 3 the one where its in a big prison, if so, i hated it to peices.

EXTR3MIST 01-30-2005 09:35 AM

Sure is - DARK, innit?

Vodstok 02-02-2005 12:23 PM

YEs it was drink. i will continue to defend it as a good movie, however.

Fincher has since made good use of cgi in other movies (fight club, for example)

I think using cgi for things that can be accomplished much easier, and better, with practical effects is unforgiveable. Computers should only be used when all other alternatives are exhausted, and should only be done by people who love the subject matter.

The lord of the rings movies were made wiht love and passion. you KNOW the direbeasts, Oliphants and cave trolls (and gollum, lest we forget him) are not real, but they sold them hook line and sinker. those creatures were works of art and looked ALIVE.

One of hte things i love about dog soldiers is that all of the effects are practical, not a single digital shot in the whole film.

And cgi blood? inexcusable. Completely inexcusable bullshit. Every time i hear that i think of shiny, fake looking orbs of purple klingon blood floating around the ship in the star trek movie with Kim Catral, and Event Horizon.

Alien Movies

I approached watching Alien vs Predator with some trepidation as I'm a big fan of both the original creations. However , I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it for what it is , a good old fashioned monster movie. I thought the effects were excellent and the film had a good pace to it with action virtually from start to finish. I particularly liked the flashback sequence that explained how the predators and aliens first came into conflict.

the reason the alien mutated in 3 was because it came out of a dog

I hated the cgi in ltr, I thought it cheapend the movies

barbra 02-02-2005 11:21 PM

so, I loved them all and bought the box set. I thought the end of 4 was really funny, all the maternal crap coming at you full force, it was building up since the second aliens when ripply learned that she had over slept, so-to-speak, her childs life. which is why they introduced newt. Why they killed newt off is between the producers, director and the writters but I think that killing those characters was the best way to keep a franchise and make a new movie at the same time. Ripply's character was all about isolation from the get go. She is usually alone physically and in idea and then in the 4th in breed. But what a neat breed to be. I think I'll watch it tonight!

MrShape 02-03-2005 11:09 AM

That was a great box set, that Quadrilogy collection. I like all of the Alien movies, but the uncut version of Alien 3 was a vast improvement. Made a lot more sense after you saw everything that Fox cut out.

Tat2 02-03-2005 01:39 PM

I've always liked the Alien series and was actually able to pick up the Alien Quadrilogy (9 DVDs!) for $34.00 this last weekend. Not Bad.:D

barbra 02-03-2005 02:21 PM

LAME! I paid $80 for mine a year ago, but it was worth it. I hate Walmart. Killer Clowns from Outerspace is on sale though for a cool $5. I wonder if I'll pay that much for THAT movie. I like the cotton candy cacuns. but thats another thread.

Hmmm - but the aliens only need a warm body to incubate in, not a host to feed and grow from as such. So human or dog shouldn't make any difference (in the original script, this alien burst from an ox!).

Either way, still no excuse for the intrusion of CGI.

Chainsaw Guy 02-03-2005 07:13 PM

The best in the seris are Alien and Aliens
With the soldiers Aliens has a Full metal Jacket kind of feel
Alien because of the art direction and the fact that theres not a weak actor in the movie

Red Dragon 02-03-2005 09:47 PM

Wanna hear something scary?

I heard Fox wants Paul Anderson to direct/write a fifth Alien film.:(

The Mothman 02-07-2005 08:26 AM

I am obsessed with the Alien series. I loved all the movies except for the third. AVP was a dissapointment and should have never been made. they made the queen look like a pussy. FUCK that movie. The predator gets all nice with that girl and shit. WTF! that just about ruined the predator's reputaion for badassness.

No small coincidence, jim cameron wanted it to feel like a vietnam movie.

This is basically how it is described:
A confident, technologically advanced military goes blindly into battle against a dedicated but technologically inferior foe. Ass gets handed to them. Pretty much describes the movie and the war.

well, the precident was sort of set with Predator II
They take their sport seriously and have respect for their prey.

Unlike humans .. who would run off the space ship drunkenly blasting at the (deer or whatever) that survived.

The Mothman 02-07-2005 01:43 PM

I haven't seen predator 2. why is it any good?

its out and at wally-world. you can also get avp with either alien cover or a preditor cover.

Vodstok 02-08-2005 04:23 AM

Predator 2 is very different from the first. A lot better in some ways, not quite so good in others. Bill paxton's character is great in an obnoxious way.

The predator's weapons are much cooler, the kills are more interesting, and it is fun to keep your eyes peeled for the alien skull.

good score too

The Mothman 02-08-2005 06:20 AM

okl I'll try and see it.

ItsAlive75 02-08-2005 02:48 PM

I actually didn't like it. The dialogue sounded like it was written in a day.

The latino female character who was pregnant, by the way... annoying.

EXTR3MIST 02-08-2005 03:06 PM

I like Predator 2 - agressive, over-the-top and pretty damned cool come the ending, you must admit.
