New Line has bought the rights to the Phantasm series and is remaking them they have also bought the original score

Hollywood has compleatly run out of ideas.

Am I the only one who likes remakes?

I like them, but i think theres getting to be too many..

No. I'm just kidding. Obviously lots of people like `em because they keep making money. Lots of it. Only, most people who see them go not even knowing the original. <Best old man voice> back in my day...they re-released popular movies.

Since the dawn of the VCR and movie rental the practice of re-releasing popular films years later has nearly diminished (with the exceptions of major cult followings like Star Wars). Now, to get audiences to return to see an old idea they need to put a new face on it. Some movies, like King Kong, deserve to be redone every few decades. The first remake was too soon, but this one promises to show us a Kong so real he will amaze audiences again. Other movies are just rehashes of an old idea. Often they are not done as well as the first. These are the ones that bug people.

I liked Dawn of the Dead and TCM was entertaining.

Normally I am 100% opposed to remakes. Leave the classics alone!

Phantasm, however, sucks ass. A remake can do nothing but improve this series. Lose the pussy little kid, the fat, bald retarded hero (Reggie) and get a better villain. (The Tall Man... Oooo.... Real fuckin' scary. :rolleyes: )

I probably still won't see it because it is based off such a shitty movie to begin with but I am all for this remake. When you start at the very bottom, there is no where to go but up.

i dont mind them if they are done well .. its as simple as that.
I dont automatically hate it just because its a remake.

I realized that this is nothing new .. its been going on in Hollywood since movies began .. there are finls ou there - comedies and dramas that have been remade 2 or 3 times.

TCM remake was visually awesome. Most everything else about it sucked. The cinematography alone made me see it twice in theaters.

Coscarelli Talks New Phantasm

Don Coscarelli, creator of the Phantasm films, told SCI FI Wire that it's been a long and bumpy road to resurrecting the horror franchise and detailed how he wound up in final talks with New Line Cinema to oversee a fifth Tall Man tale. "About a year ago it became apparent that there was renewed interest by the studios in the cult-classic horror franchises from the late '70s and early '80s," Coscarelli said in an interview. "I was subsequently solicited by a number of executives about Phantasm."

Coscarelli wrote and directed the first four installments. "The general take these execs had was to do a generic remake and cast it with young actor-types from the WB network," he said. "This did not appeal to me. But I did give it some thought and came upon an approach which I thought might work for the 'mall audiences' these executives covet, and at the same time also appeal to our hardcore, longtime 'phans.' That's no easy task, by the way."

Coscarelli, riding the success of his 2002 cult hit Bubba Ho-Tep, started collaborating on a script with Phantasm comic creator Stephen Romano. He also met Jeff Katz, a "genuine horror fan" and New Line executive. "[Katz] 'got' the concept and was rabid in his enthusiasm to bring us into the studio," Coscarelli said. "He was also keenly aware that Angus Scrimm [the Tall Man, the films' creepy and lethal grave robber,] and Reggie Bannister [Reggie] would be crucial to the success of any further Phantasms. When I asked Angus if he was ready to pull on the tall boots and continue his invasion of the planet, he said, 'Tell them I'm not ready to hang up the old balls yet.' And Reggie is chomping at the bit to break out his four-barrel shotgun and burn some dwarf ass."

Coscarelli added: "By the way, the response from the Phantasm fans to the announcement has been overwhelming ... and humbling, actually. Now the pressure is on to make something good. I won't be directing this Phantasm, just producing. After all, how many Phantasms can one make in a life?"

angus scrimm looked like he was ready to drop dead 10 years ago now he's 78 so unless he's not doing to much running I don't see how he would be able to do it. Clint Eastwood on the other hand is actually in shape I'm sure he could be at this point but like I said he looked like he was on his way out 10 years ago.

No casting is set in stone but New Line are keen to bring in Bruce Campbell at some point.

Reggie is supposed to be in it but be sure to voice your support online that Bannister is the only Reggie you'll accept, so the moneymen don't get any funny ideas!

Reggie spoke to Angus about appearing in the new films, Angus said simply "WHY NOT?"

Michael Baldwin has a good chance at making a cameo.

Don't give up on a the Phantasm's End sequel script yet. There's still 'talk'.

This is truly going to be a relaunch rather then remake. Reg said in the beginning it will be similar to Phantasm 1 but halfway through just go off into complete unpredictable Phantasmland.

The executive who sphereheaded (pun intended) the project Jeff Katz is a diehard phan who will lay his ass on the line to protect the integrity of the franchise!

He confirmed the ponytail will be back BABY!

If Bruce Campbell does actually end up in this crapper, then I feel sorry for him but I probably still wouldn't go see it. Who would he play? Michael's older brother?

Also, there is no way in hell Clint Eastwood would ever sign up for this so don't get your hopes up fellas. ;)

I said the guy that plays the tall man is 78 and Vamp replied by saying Clint is 74. the point was if Clint can do what he does in films at his age that angus scrimm could still play the tall man.

No, hollywood are not running out of ideas at all. They just take what is popular or has recently been popular and make movies until it dies, then move on to the next phase, have you people been paying no attention.
