Tod Browning's Freaks

Freaks is coming out on DVD in a couple of weeks and there is several different endings, how long has this been away from the public and has it been on video before?

urgeok 04-20-2005 05:32 AM

i've had it on laserdisc for ages

zwoti 04-20-2005 09:09 AM

been out on dvd in the us for awhile

gordytheghoul 04-20-2005 10:40 PM

Most important: it's a great fucking movie and shouldn't be missed. Yes, it's been available here in the USA, but I know that's not the case everywhere, so don't miss this, a true milestone in horror filmmaking.

I read a few reviews about Freaks and heard that it was ment to be really gruesome...is this true?

wouldn't say gruesome.........more disturbing than gruesome

tom-tom 04-26-2005 12:17 AM

Oh good, my type of movie

jenna26 04-26-2005 12:42 AM

I love this movie. I found it to be deeply disturbing the first time I watched it. But I have recommended it to several friends and only one really liked it. I think many people find it to be in poor taste.

But I agree it shouldn't be missed; love it or hate it, it is very effective. I need to remember to get me a copy on DVD.

Very cool movie.... they played a really nice restored print at a film festival I went to a couple of years ago. Might have to check this out again.

ClassicHorror 04-29-2005 09:51 AM

The truly weird thing about this film is that they used "real" freaks.

yourlastmistake 05-01-2005 04:29 PM

Yes, they were real sideshow freaks. Also, Tod Browning directed the original Dracula with Bela Lugosi.

ClassicHorror 05-02-2005 03:22 AM

Ya of course he did  lol

I really can't say that little guy with no arms or legs doing anything, I found that wrong.

Just adding my 2 cents for those that didn't know.

I have always kind of wondered about that myself. :p

But that was what all the controversy was about. The fact that "real" freaks were used. People tend to think of it as exploitative. But I don't think so, the so called normal people in the film were much more despicable in just about every way. It just showed something many people didn't want to see, for their own comfort and so they were offended by that. I think it was a very gutsy film to make.

this was me and my fiance's first date. we went to a showing of Freaks. it was her first time to see it, and she loved it. which was a good sign of a "keeper."

I was offended its just that it seemed alittle wrong, I'm glad the film was made, it truly was gutsy.

watch this great movie.
the freaks ware real, but you should see behind their statue and explore the mind of people never more actzual as those days...

bschulte 05-22-2005 03:21 PM

This is one of my favorites. The cool thing about it (and this was said earlier) is that the true freaks are Cleopatra and the Strong Man, and they are normal humans. I think Cleo got what she deserved! They really meant it when they told her she was "one of us". :D

Yep, there is a moral there. And a warning: never, under any circumstances, underestimate anyone. :p

Yep, the dude with no limbs kicked ass. I've always imagined he had a hand in Cleopatra's "change".

Vodstok 06-02-2005 07:49 AM

Speaking of "One of us". That scene was the most disturbing out of the whole movie, even worse than the chase scene at the end.

However, i dont buy the pinheads hurting anyone. they just acted like nice little kids.

Just saw this movie about a week ago for the first time. Really bizzarre, and really awesome. A great classic for sure.

The_Return 05-18-2006 03:41 PM

Just bought it off Ebay, really excited to see it.

It really is an amazing film. I think it's utterly and genuinely disturbing.

And I think it's better than Dracula ('31). That'll be hard for you to decide, however, I know that.

As good as I hope and think this movie will be, it would take alot to accomplish a feat like that! Dracula is perfect in nearly every way, I cant imaging that Browning could top himself.
