The Shining
Hey,
what did everyone think of The Shining? My friend and I have had an arguement. He thinks it's unrealistic I say it's a classic. |
update!
I said it was a classic because: I thought Jack niclson(spelling?) did a great job, I really liked the music (when something scary happened), and it was a damn good movie! |
Uh, one: it is hands down the greatest horror movie ever and two: tell your friend he's an idiot for me because you can't not like a horror movie because it's "unrealistic". Do you think it's more realistic that theres a guy who drowned in a lake and now kills people left and right and has the power to heal himself? How about a man escaped from an assylum that just can't die? Horror movies aren't realistic, buddy. That's why we like 'em.

I know what you mean! what horror movie is realistic?
and check this out, it's pretty good. http://www.angryalien.com/0504/shiningbunnies.html |

never heard of it .. is it an older movie ?
 |
I have a feeling your gonna get flamed, you should back out of this slowly with out making any sudden movements. They smell fear you know.... Also check out the movie sections of this forum..... :)
|
hmm, the shining..absolute greatness...however, not because of Nicolsons preformance..but the genius off Stanley Kubrick. Yes, i know, the man is a legend :)

BUT anyway, I actually think it was 50/50...Kubrick really pulled this together, but try to imagine it without Nicholson...I can't. |

one of the best horror movies of this generation.
|
wasn't the shining steven kings work? I grew up on the shining. and plan to have my daught er watch it when she is old enough. Still think the mom is butt ass ugly though.
|
is this the one about that guy who has to rescue the bird from the secret cave behind that waterfall on the magical mountain because tied around its foot is a ribbon that holds a key that opens a door in a bewitched tree in the middle of faery land.
is that the one ? |
No, this is the one about that big bear at the forest preserve who steals picnic baskets. At least I think...

I love how this is actually one of the more realistic ones out there, as far as Supernatural horror goes.
|
Hands down the best performances in a horror movie.

Can't say I think it's the greatest horror movie of all time, but there are several things about it that make me like it more with each time I watch it. |

Well, i admit shelley duvall isn't very pretty, but damn everything if she isn't one hell of an amazing horror actress. |

I still love this movie to this day (the remake was a sick tragedy). I think the fact that Nicholson and Duvall aren't Hollywood's idea of beauty helped make it even more believable.

I still say that the TV remake was FARRRR superior.
If people can let go of their love of the original for just one minute, they might see that the remake is MUCH more detailed 9what is it 6 hours long?) and its 100% identical to the book. (with a far better ending). I always thought a) the mother in the original is ANNOYING AS HELL (same with the kid)...and b) the ending SUCKED (cause i read the book first) |
I still havent got around to seeing the remake, but I would like to.
Skoof - In a way, I think the movie had a better ending. Can you imagine if they tried to recreate the topiaries? God, that would have looked AWFUL with 80's effects. On top of that, I hated the feel-good ending of the book. Up until then it was great, but that was horrible IMO. |
Ok, minus the ending debate.
The Mother and Child where annoying as hell. just an opinion. Check out the remake, Return. You will LOVE it. Even if you end up liking the original better, its still a fantastic miniseries. |

i just downl.... uhm .. obtained the 3 DVD set - so I'll have an opinion shortly |

So if you have read the book, gimme a book-to-movie kind of review, would ya'? |
I loved the book and the orginal movie. But even though the miniseries follows the book more closely I could never make it through the miniseries. And I really couldn't stand the guy from wings as Jack.

It's one of the best horror movies!
|
I'd have to agree with the people that mentioned the remake of 'The Shining', I watched the original & the remake and in the remake it has better graphics, but yet the same good plotline!Plus for some reason I'm disappointed with that scene with the old lady in the bath. lol In the remake she was actually kinda creepy, but in the original, she was just weird...

i read the book years ago ... i saw the movie soon after and wasnt dissapointed .. i'd take a Kubrick interpretation over any 'made for TV' version anyday (as a rule) i guess i'll know for sure eventually |
I like the Kubrick version more than the book or the mini series. I caught the mini series when it was on TV awhile back and thought it was a decent enough distraction with a couple of cool moments. Its a good rainy sunday afternoon watch. I never watched the Tommyknockers mini series but enjoyed the mini series of IT (which I'll have to find a cheap copy of to watch again).

Things have changed since then, however. Although The Shining is still one of my all time faves, there are a few ahead of it. (Go rent Eraserhead or The Evil Dead :) ) |
