Horor Trivia Buffs -- I need help!

I have been trying to identify a horror movie I saw in the movie theater during the early to mid-80's . It was most likely around 1982 or 1983.

The movie was about a religious cult (a la Jim Jones). I believe they had a compound of shacks in the desert, but I'm not sure about that part. I remember there was a fire, can't remember if that was how it ends or just part of the movie.

The most prominent detail that I remember well was the striking use of the Isely Brother's song "Time" (...time has come today....young hearts can go their way...) and the slow tick-tock sound effect used throughout the song and sometimes with echo/reverb. It really added immensely to the creepy feeling at the right moments. Kind of like the music in Jaws, every time you hear the tick-tock part of time fading-in you knew something was up!

I have been trying to identify this movie for more than 20 years. I saw it once and loved it, but it was gone from the theaters before I could catch it again. I have asked at many video stores and many people who claim to be big horror fans, no one seems to have seen it but me (and my date that night).

Anyone have any idea? PLEASE!!!!

Thanks!

No, I'm sorry but that wasn't it. I just watched the trailer after you suggested it.

Thank you though!

Any more ideas?

It sure sounds like Bad Dreams.IMDB even mentions the fact that the song "Time Has Come Today" [by the Chamber Brothers...not The Isley Brothers ] is used quite effectively.

good to see the zwoti moniker in use again.;)

^ Really does sound like "Bad Dreams". Cult in the desert on fire while "Time" played in background. The Intro of that movie was where the cult members poured gasoline on themselves & burned alive. The rest of the movie the one survivor was in a mental hospital.

See, I remember the cult in the desert, the fire and the song Time but I really don't remember the mental hospital part, but then again it has been 20 years and memories fade!

I think you guys must be right, I'll add Bad Dreams to my Netflix queue and check it out!

Thank you very much for the help, I'll let you know in a week or so if that was it for sure.

Thanks again!!!

No way. The culinary equivalent of being face-fucked by Ron Jeremy is no substitute for some bacons & eggsesses.

Bad Dreams was it!

I couldn't believe all the people that were in the movie that were nobodies when it came out!

Thank you so much for solving a years-old mystery.

Take care,
Rod
