Official World Cup Thread
i am staggered that no one has started an official world cup thread (it starts tomorrow with Germany vs. Costa Rica) . . .so here it is. perhaps we should have predictions on winners here!
My sentimental prediction - England my real prediction - France others? |

This is just as insignificant as the "fingering" thread. Nobody that matters cares about soccer. |
None of us Americans get in to soccer (football) because it is not a sport that we excel at.
In baseball, do the Kansas City Royals have many fans? No, because they suck every year. Well, it's sorta like that for Americans & soccer. We can't get behind our team if they just get their ass kicked by Brazil & England and any other country they play... |
Brazil all the way!

Anyway, I agree with bwind (and yes, I'm being a crybaby Elvis). If we're going to get our asses kicked, then what's the point in cheering? Then again, I am still cheering for my team the Philadelphia Phillies even though their doing horrible this season. Damn you Phillies!!! *sits quietly* GO PHILLIES!!! |
Soccer has never caught on here in the US because 1, our teams have never won anything major, and 2, no superstar players (like the Beckham's or Pele's) have ever come from here.
The rest of the world should be glad though. You don't want a bunch of drunk, redneck Americans getting involved in your soccer riots anyways. (I just picture like a whole arena of drunk Nascar fans brawling with an arena full of Brazilian soccer hooligans and it's a funny image.) |

FOOTBALL (not soccer!) is, apparently, huge in the US during high school and university. The main reason it doesn't go beyond that is because the TV networks dont have sufficient room to advertise as they do during sports like baseball, NFL etc. With the exception of the half time interval there are no lengthy stops in play. As for the World Cup, COME ON IN-GER-LAND!!!!! |
Sentimental pick- U.S.
Realistically- Brazil |
Shit I realy likes that Spain win this fuckin' world cup....but it never will happen so I go with Brazil, they've got the best female fans!!!:D

I wouldn't say none. I've been a Saints my whole life, I'm used to sticking with teams that suck. |
The US hasn't a chance in hell of getting out of their group. I also want England to win. I'll be cheering for them. Goddess, I hope France doesn't win, gloating poo-heads.
Doesn't Brazil win every time around? Secret desire? Ireland. They never do. They're decent, but they never make it very far. I do remember one turn they did make it decently far, but Italy whipped their ass. I had an Ireland World Cup t-shirt. Haphazard...I'm not going to be a shit, but as an American I happen to like the World Cup, and it is, properly, football. My bro promised that if he got some extra cash and we went to Europe this summer he'd take me to Germany for a game. Then I promised Zwoti for a stop off and a t-shirt. However, because of my brother's stupid air-head wife, they're getting a divorce so no trip to Europe, no WC game, and no stop off to see the illustrious Zwoti with t-shirt in hand.:( :(  Okay, Zero, give me the dates, so that I'm sure not to miss all the games. (It's also golf season, so I'm gonna be fighting my dad). |
Quote:
Last time around they got to the quarter-finals and gave Germany a run for their money, so unlike in the past, I'd say they actually have a shot...not a great one...but an ok one. |

BTW, I hope Aaron Brooks is an upgrade over KFC (Kerry Fuckin' Collins). I never thought he was terrible with you guys. Thoughts? |
Quote:
At least the Raiders have gotten to and won Super Bowls, the Saints are just fucking heartbreaking. Brooks has every tool and he's shown he's got the talen to use them, he's just not consistent. But Moss' double and triple teams are going to help him a good bit, imo it's up to him, I guess we'll find out. |

I might be skipping the golf season this year in favor of the World Cup. Seriously. I'm also hoping that the WC will cheer my brother up a little bit. @ Austin... Sorry 'bout that. It's not that I wouldn't love to see the US take the World Cup one time. I would. I really would, and I'd gloat about it for years and years. However, my bro and I were talking about teams this time around, and apparently the US isn't doing so well this time. Every team has it's down time, even Argentina and Brazil. |

I agree, they don't have the greatest chance, never do and probably never will. I was just saying this time is looking a little brighter than usual due to their run last time. |

5 to 1 odds and the #2 team in the world....yep, we're getting our ass kicked. |

my prediction - now 40 minutes before the opening whistle-
England 2 Paraguay 1 (of course word is that rooney isn't playing, which could help - he's good but I think he'll get red-carded at least once during the tournament) |

As for England - hmm, a spotty performance at best - I'm impressed by the defense and the holding midfielders - beckham is, as always, overrated and doesn't really get involved in anything but set plays and -i hate to say this about one of my Arsenal players- Ashley Cole was wretched! Otherwise Joe Cole and John Terry were co-men of the match IMHO! Now its just to wait for the USA on Monday!! |
Quote:
Liverpool bias I may be but I thought Steven Gerrard had a great game and very harshly given a yellow card by that fucked up referee. |
trinidad were good, their defence played amazing, hopefully they'll party a bit much tonight and won't play to the same standard.
joe cole did well going forward, but once again (especially in the 2nd half) he was trying to dribble pass everyone......pass the ball ffs!! i'm not even gonna mention his defensive duties as once again he kept going awol, how many time did lampard have to cover the left side cuz the "pocket wonder" was either walking back from upfield or had gone wandering across the pitch  |

I agree with Zwoti - as the game went on the england midfield and forwards seemed increasingly impatient and trying to take on the paraguay defense one on one - not a good chance. I was disappointed by the pairing of Crouch and Owen. I had hoped it would give a good balance of speed and height - but Crouch, who was fair at best, couldn't seem to get the ball into a shooting position and Owen was largely absent. That said, I don't really like the idea of Rooney and Owen - two very similar style players (and I'm betting rooney gets at least one red card before the WC is over). My feeling for a long time is that England hasn't had the right combination since Shearer left - he was a good, aggressive, 'target' forward who could create space for something to happen - Crouch is good - but not quite in that way. But, I'm not sure who they can put up front to make it work. It'll be interesting when England play Sweden - probably the most realistic test of their worth. |
My sentimental pick is England but Brazil will be very dangerous.
The England match was dull as hell, need to get my man from Man Utd Wayne Rooney on the pitch as soon as possible. They also need to move Steven Gerrard up in the hole behind the strikers for some more offensive punch. That walking skeleton Crouch fucking blows IMO |
I hate to say it but the Argies looked quite handy against Ivory Coast. Despite getting a little panicky towards the end they look difficult to beat.

Thanks to Zwoti for the consistent results - saves me going to BBC webpage first. . .
but now its time to put our money (well, at least pride) where our collectives mouths are - PREDICTIONS! I will boldly be the first to predict a WC Winner and choose a team who has not even played a match yet. .. my prediction for winner's of World Cup 2006 Les Bleus! |
