Church bells. What´s the point?

the church bells were originally meant to scare off evil spirits. supposedly the making of racket was intolerable to the dark side.

Fortunately for me, there are no churches anywhere near where I live. I don't mind the bells though.

Why are they still being used??

Because they are catholics, they're still living on the XII century. My family has a house in a little village where the church has change the bells by recordings with things like Ave Maria and shit like that. It's weird when you start to listen on sunday 7'00 am "Ave Maria mater misericordia" .....

Anything that irritates Angra is automatically a good thing in my book:D

i used to live right across the street from our town's courthouse and it rang every hour, it got kind of annoying. but the apartment we lived in was also over a bar that had kareoke (sp?) almost every night.........so we got used to the noise.

My apartments are next to a church that's fully aware that it's the 21st century.....they use digital bells.

I don't know why...but after reading that I think my blood started boiling...

My church has bells (ok A bell) and it's NOT Catholic...

They're nice on special occasions like weddings and such. Just buy a different house, wasn't the church there bells and all before your house?

I guess that frightens away the......digital spooks?

The sound of church bells don't bother me. In fact, I kind of like them. Before you ask...yes, I'm a Christian. Catholic, actually. Oddly enough, Jacob Singer, I do live in the 21st century. :)

Ours plays Westminster Chimes...So does our doorbell...lol

It's advertising. McDonald's has the golden arches, car dealerships have wild wacky inflatable arm flailing tubemen, churches have bells.

Well I've got nothing against catholics but here every body knows that sunday it's their holy day, so they don't have to use that kind of sonic torture. Some people like to rest till late on sundays.

Why can´t the curches follow the tides of time and start to EMAIL or send a SMS to those significant few who actually gives a crap about going to church, and let us unholy ones get a long well deserved rest. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEEEEASE!!!

Because ringing a giant bell is cooler.

I like the Church Bells when they ring. But then, they don't wake me up at 7 am. They're a few blocks away, so I can't hear them unless I go outside.

Everyone who said they like the bells are christian, or don't really hear them all day. All those that are annoyed by the bells are not christian... interesting. Could the theory of unholy spirits not liking the racket be true???

I don't hear the bells. The closest catholic church is to far away to hear. But anything that would get me up early deserves to die. :: cough cough :: Grant. Ah, and he's christian too... double kill.

I guess they hadn't heard the AC/DC song 'Hells Bells' yet. If theey had, they would have realized just how stupid of an idea that was.

I have a church, not too far away, couple of blocks, and it has these bells it rings, but they don't do it all the time. In fact the only time I notice it is on Sunday morning and I kinda like it, but that my be because it's just farenough away, soubnds relaxing to me.

Or maybe it´s because you´re a JEHOVAH!!!
