I found From Hell to be completely and utterly dull. It tried for style more than substance, but achieved neither.

Doc Faustus 01-15-2007 08:45 AM

I agree with that. It also mythologizes and commercializes a series of terrible murders that a lot of people are still ignorant enough to think exist only in the movies. Alan Moore wrote the graphic novel partially with the intent to inform, but the movie completely destroyed that intent and mangled the facts. Anybody actually interested in the Whitechapel murders should check out www.casebook.org and look into this real life horror. It made the pretense of capturing the nuances of a world, but in fact mangled the setting and glamorized the life of Whitechapel prostitutes. It switched the physical descriptions of two of the victims and made a failed police inspector into a full on hero, as opposed to Moore's portrayal of him as a somewhat competent policeman. From Hell takes a real life tragedy and infuses it with Tim Burton pseudogothic. There's better stuff on the subject, better stuff in the genre and it could have just plain been better.

I actually picked this up the other day. It's only good the first time you watch it, but I have a Jack the Ripper fixiation. My mother's side of the family is still doing research into our English ancestors, but I'm sure they'll find Annie Chapman was related to us somehow.

knife_fight 01-15-2007 05:08 PM

yet another example of a great book mangled into a mediocre film.

crippler666 01-15-2007 05:26 PM

The From Hell graphical novel borrows heavy from the Stephen Knight's "Jack The Ripper - The Final Solution".

The whole royal connection, Anne Crook and the stage coach theory was all his. The only real difference is the ripper, he said it was the work of 3 men (one of which was William Gull).

I did enjoy the film and felt it did depict a small part of the depraverty of Eastend Victorian London.

The length of the film was about right (but watch the deleted scenes as some of them could have added to the film).

a fact that Alan Moore makes no attempt to hide, considering he quotes from it directly in footnotes and in the appendices.

1. From hell isnt a chick flick
2. The film is about Jack the ripper as a theroy rather than a fact
3. i stuided jack the ripper and still do to this day it is a fascianting case with many different theory on who was to blame and why it happened
4. the film is long in context not minutes it feels like a long film even if its only 121 minutes
and finally i found this film enjoyable but only when watched with the deleted scenes and stuff that was cut out from television reviewers

P.S PLZ IGNORE THE BAD SPELLING I HAVE DSYLEXIA

Hmmmmmm I watched From Hell quite a while ago and only watched it once as I wasnt too impressed. However I may now look into the Jack the Ripper case and rewatch From Hell.

sawmeg 01-17-2007 12:10 PM

you should there are loads of theorys into who jack really was and they are all intresting i admit From hell does sensetionalise the theory but its still an intresting watch if you know a little background

What to actually read what he was saying:rolleyes:

You are right, as far as I know Burton had no actual involvement with From Hell. HOWEVER, it does have some similarities to his style.

sawmeg 01-17-2007 01:15 PM

it was nothing like tim burtons work which yes i am familar with

it bugs me that everything with johnny depp in it is starting to be comparaed to tim burton
