The Official War Movie Thread

Well? What are your favorites and why? Do you have a fascination with a certain war? I think it's high time for a discussion!

I'm personally fond of Vietnam flicks, most especially Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, and Apocalypse Now. The war was a horribly terrifying one, and it's interesting to see the effects it had on innocent people who, in most cases, didn;t even know what they were fighting for.

pinkerton 02-17-2007 07:59 PM

Kpro will love this thread when he sees it!:)

My favorites(in no order):

Apocalypse Now
Tigerland
Full Metal Jacket
Uncommon Valor(if that counts)
Casualties of War
The Big Red One
Platoon
The Dirty Dozen
Saving Private Ryan

And I am sure I forgot a few.

alkytrio666 02-17-2007 08:02 PM

Patton is a good WWII flick with an exceptional performance by the George C. Scott. Have you seen it?

pinkerton 02-17-2007 08:04 PM

When I was much younger, probably too young to appreciate it.I think I will rent it and watch it as an adult.

Totally agree with those choices. I'd add in The Deer Hunter and Hamburger Hill. As far as WWII, I'd have to go with The Dirty Dozen and Patton. And I've got to include The Outlaw Josey Wales (American Civil War). Hell, I even enjoyed Sergeant York (WWI).

pinkerton 02-17-2007 08:29 PM

Good call cactus, I forgot Hamburger Hill and The Deer Hunter.

pinkerton 02-17-2007 08:30 PM

I also enjoyed Dead Presidents.

Unaboner3000 02-17-2007 10:44 PM

I'm a fan of WW2 history and Civil War History. So, a few classics that come to mind are:

Glory (great, GREAT film!)
Gettysburg (pretty damn good too)
Gone With the Wind (don't rag on me for this one!)
North and South (mini-series)

Patton (George C. Scott is amazing)
Saving Private Ryan (maybe the most disturbing war movie)
Stalag 17 (an older classic)
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Dirty Dozen

Just a few great ones that come to mind on those two wars.

That's good to know. I came across a cheap DVD of this movie recently and still haven't watched it. I will crack it open this weekend and check it out. :)

alkytrio666 02-18-2007 06:44 AM

AH! I can't believe I forgot about The Deer Hunter! Thanks for the reminder, cactus.

The_Return 02-18-2007 07:39 AM

You know, I realized a few days back that Ive never actually seen a war movie. Ive seen plenty that have war as a backdrop (Casablanca, Pan's Labyrinth, ect.) but no actual war movies.

I've been thinking about picking up that "Dossier" edition of Apocalypse Now, its pretty cheap...so is Full Metal Jacket.

I'll use this thread for ideas, thanks Alky:)

bloodrayne 02-18-2007 07:46 AM

You guys are gonna laugh me outta here...But, here goes anyway...

Personally, I don't like war movies...

BUT...I was very surprised that I really DID like Good Morning, Vietnam...And, I liked it a LOT :)

It really is a very good movie

It is a very good movie, Rayne. And there isn't a thing wrong with not liking war movies. Usually, they're either your cup of tea or they aren't, end of story.

Return: Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket are great ones to start out with. You can usually pick up Platoon pretty cheap, too, try that one. I got it for $6.99 a couple of nights ago. Great flick.

Posher778 02-18-2007 08:38 AM

I own Black Hawk Down, but its not that great imo.

My fav would have to be Platoon, easily. Or Band of Brothers.

paws the great 02-18-2007 09:19 AM

Here's some of my favorites.

Enemy at the Gates

I think my dad owns The Steel Helmet, but i've never seen it. What's it about?

alkytrio666 02-18-2007 11:10 AM

The Steel Helmet, eh? I'll have to check it out.

pinkerton 02-18-2007 12:36 PM

What did everyone else think of Jarhead?I really liked it.

pinkerton 02-18-2007 12:40 PM

I also thought A Midnight Clear was an excellent movie.

VampiricClown 02-18-2007 12:51 PM

The Great Escape....

The STE 02-18-2007 01:01 PM

I think All Quiet on the Western Front was really overrated, and badly acted on the part of the lead.

The Mothman 02-18-2007 01:09 PM

I'd have to say that Saving Private Ryan rises above all others. I dont think ive ever seen a movie that captured the horrors of war as well as this one did.

Ash's_evil_hand 02-20-2007 05:51 AM

I'll add a couple of 'out there' ones...

'Sink the Bismarck'

and 'Das Boot'. Preferably the mini-series, but it was edited down into one long film. It's about life aboard a German U-boat - claustrophobic and scary. And very unusual to see a film from the German point of view. There are points in it where you're really rooting for them, and it's so original to 'humanise' the Germans. Brilliant.

Also loved Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Schindler's List, Hamburger Hill.

knife_fight 02-20-2007 06:11 AM

Das Boot is awesome, good call.

I would also add Catch 22 and Siege of Firebase Gloria.

hammerfan 02-20-2007 06:17 AM

I'm not too much into war movies either. But I love Glory and Gone With The Wind. Saving Private Ryan was awesome, too.

newb 02-20-2007 06:26 AM

The Great Escape
Cross of Iron
Bullet in the Head
Ememy at the Gates
Private Ryan
Midnight Clear
Black Hawk Down
Apocalypse Now
Platoon
Full Metal Jacket
Boys from Company C
