Hostel Part II, what a joke

Hostel Part II was a huge disappointment. I highly enjoyed the first Hostel and it falls in one of my favorite movies but the sequel falls short...very short. The movie was extremely boring and contained probably 15-20 minutes of action if that. And when the action came it couldn't look any faker. What disappointed me the most was the ending. I don't know about you guys but I loved the ending in Hostel. It kept you the edge of your seats wanting an encore, I loved it. But the ending in this was so ferocious that my mouth stood open in awe as I thought there is NO way it's actually over. The plot was god-awful, the blood and guts was faker than pamela andersons breasts and the ending sucked more than paris hilton, what more do I have to say. If I had to grade the two I would give Hostel a 7.5/10 and Hostel 2 a 2.5/10. Compare the two and you can only imagine how bad it was.

Here are a few questions you may have.
Was it better than the original? Hell no! Not even close.
Was it more bloody and disgusting? Hell no! It was pretty even.
Is it worth the watch? Of course it's worth the watch but I will admit its very disappointing. If you didn't like the original just wait for the DVD. If you did like the original check it out at the theatres. It's at least better than your avg horror movie.

All in all these are my main points.
-It was NOT as good as the first
-The gore factor was about the same
-It was very disappointing although better than your average thriller
-It had one of the worst endings I have ever witnessed

MAY CONTAIN SPOILDERS:
It had one of those scenes such as the eye scene from the first. And it looked as fake probably 10x worse. I will describe the scene below if you would like to know if your not planning on seeing it

WILL CONTAIN MAJOR SPOILERS!
The scene similiar to the original is a catastration. A mans dick is cut off with I beleive it was scissors and than fed to the dogs. Oh.... and it was fake as hell.

swiss tony 05-29-2007 11:44 PM

is it not intentionally fake looking as an homage to the movies it celebrates?

SodaGirl 05-29-2007 11:45 PM

Thanks for the review, sad to hear it is disappointing. I will still check it out though.

Are there at least less breasts in this one? I found them a bit annoying in the first...

As did I. The first half of Hostel was nothing more than a light porn film.

Probably bout 4 scenes of female nudity and 2 scenes of male nudity. Maybe 5...cant remember exactly.

Shadow 05-30-2007 06:48 AM

What is with all the nudity in films?
When I began watching Hostel I was worried I had got the wrong film.
I was hoping for something better from Hostel 2 (crazy I know) but from the sounds of it thats just not going to happen. I will probably watch it anyway but I will not be racing out to see it.

are all these things not in the style of seventies exploitation cinema with the titilation and fake OTT gore?

Didn't work for me much either; I like much of the second half and the end, so I didn't hate the movie, definitely had its moments......but I think Roth was reaching a bit, trying to make a more intelligent film than he was capable of making at this point. I actually enjoyed Cabin Fever, uneven as it was, because I think he accomplished exactly what he was trying for; here I think he was actually trying to make a horror film of some substance, and fell way short. At least that's the way I see, maybe I'm wrong.

Just a note, the only version of this film "out there" is an unfinished workprint, and as such has not had final special effects touches added yet (one scene still includes a green screen!). As a counter to others opinion of this, I really enjoyed it, which is surprising as I didn't love the first film, and thought Cabin Fever was crapola. Give it a chance, it far exceeded what I thought it would achieve.

Yes, the version I watched was a workprint. So it very well could be missing scenes but it also could very well be the final, finished copy. I am still going to see this opening night hoping I missed a few scenes.

I found the original Hostel to be a piss poor movie, to say the least. I was really looking forward to it, but it was such a let down, I couldn't even find the words to explain just how disappointed I was. So I don't think I'll be checking out the sequel in the near future.

Shady 06-05-2007 10:46 AM

Well, I wouldn't take my word just yet on this movie. Supposedly the workprint that everyone has seen, including me, is missing many scenes. Not to mention this is getting GREAT reviews from everyone. But I've learned my lesson listening to reviews. But you never know we will see.

I just got this "work print" in the mail the other day. Haven't watched it yet. You guys sure make it sound like a pile of shit. If its worse than whats coming to theatres, I'm tempted to not even watch this print. If it sucks that bad, I'll not go watch it in the theatre.

If its as bad as you guys say it is, the film will kill any chance it had of becoming a franchise. I didn't think it could get any worse than the 1st one. I guess I was wrong.

If I pull an all nighter, I'm gonna watch this tonight for shits and giggles.

I bet Roth is PISSED this leaked. Sounds like a buzz killer to me.

Why would you want to watch a work print of any movie?

Give me the complete and final cut of Hostel 2!:)

Shady 06-05-2007 03:32 PM

I just finished watching the workprint again and it grew on me a little bit. First time I watched it I was constantly pausing it, eatin food, takin breaks, finishin it an hour later, so on and so forth. Anyways it's not as bad as my previous post made it out to be but it still does not top the first IMO. It just needs a better ending..it kind of just ends out of nowhere.

illdojo 06-06-2007 09:14 AM

Eli Roth has made good Horror Films thus far. I'm sure it will be decent. ;)

Liquid_Mirror43 06-06-2007 09:17 AM

I never saw the original Hostel. But thought about going to see Hostel Part II. Then I got a call from a friend around 12:00 last night talking me out of it.
I'll admit have pretty low expectations for almost every horror movie that comes out nowadays though.

Jameslofton 06-07-2007 12:16 PM

This movie was fucking great. Light years ahead of the first one. In fact, this should have been the first one and not the 2nd. He got the formula right this time. No soft porn bullshit, small amounts of nudity, a great story, and some decent gore shots(which will obviously look better in the theatre released version).

Also something that is normally taboo in american cinema is on this. I wonder if that makes the final cut?

I was expecting strike two, but Roth actually hit a home run.

Definitely check this film out, even if you hated the first one. Also, if you never seen the first one, you can still watch this and not be confused. It gives a small recap, and also goes into much more detail about how the Hostel operates.

illdojo 06-08-2007 05:02 PM

8/10
I just caught a Matinee of the film. If you liked the first one. You will definitely like part 2. Better acting, better story, pretty much just a better film.
I'm giving 8/10 just because of the end.
Thanks Eli. That was brutal. :D

stenchofdeath 06-11-2007 08:06 AM

I just saw Hostel 2 on the weekend. When i left the cinema, i said to the person that was with me that the movie was crap. However after a day or so, there were specific parts in the film that i couldn't get out of my head. There are spoilers here, so if you don't want to know don't read on. The obvious reference to Countess Bathory i.e. the lady bathing in the slaughtered girls blood was a great element. The other was the powersaw through the girls face/ head. The thing that i like about the films is how events are explained, and how there is a conclusion to the events that have happened or they are explained or shown why they occured to the viewer. The weakest parts of the film was where it was implied that the dogs killed or were going to kill. Also where the cannibal is eating parts of the foreigner in the room, it could have been done more convincingly, eating his face or something. The dogs weren't even frothing at the mouth. Dobermans or pitbulls would have looked more convincing. Like the Saw movies, what makes this good is the interesting way that people are tortured and killed. i don't mind sex and horror as a mix. You almost got the impression that the rich foreign girl was attracted to Beth by the kiss she gave her at the rockpools on the back of the neck.:D

I am going to see Hostel II tomorrow night. This will be the first time in three years that I have set foot in a theatre. I hate theatres but have to have a look at this movie - I hope it is worth the effort. It seems that those who liked the first one, liked this one. This gives me hope.
