honestly, "scariest" tv show
i saw a post asking about the scariest tv show. i was a bit annoyed at the sarcasm of the post due to there being nothing related to the subject on here, so i decided to post my own. what do all of you truly think the scariest tv show is or was? even if it isn't the "scariest", there are plenty of choices out there. (tales from the crypt, friday the 13th the series, tales from the dark side, outer limits, twilight zone, dark shadows, etc etc etc.)

I'd say that none of the horror television series could really take the crown for me because they all have some amazing episodes.

speaking of, i did a random post back in the grammar/punctuation thread i made. i won't say the same thing here because of it being for tv but it got me thinking.

Most if not all TV shows are lame.
Buffy and Angel are dross.Great for the little ones i agree but nah, just childish fun for a kid to pass away an hour or so. I know many love these shows but why, sure Gellar is fit but does that mean its a great show,no.Great for an afternoon with the young `uns and nothing more. Dont mean to upset any Buffy/Angel fans here but thats my take on the subject. The last three weeks i have been watching what is termed as `6 Films to keep you awake`.A series of short movies about 75/80 minutes long. One or two have been fine but one which i saw last week was superb.Titled `To Let`.They are Spanish with subtitles but very easy to read and doesnt distract from the movie experience. |
Moonlight?
What about Moonlight? Anyone ever watch that? I have never actually seen an episode but my buddy works on SFX on the show. Well he did until it was cancelled last week. Poor Joel Silver, Speed Racer bombs and no TV pickup for Moonlight.
Guess he'll have to sulk with his millions.... |
The Night Stalker!
A fantastic made for tv movie. The series was decent as well.

when i was a kid - i distinctly remember Rod Serling's Night Gallery scaring me.
the particular episode was something about some kind of supernatural leopard |
Some of the television shows are pretty good IMO. Twilight zone, X-Files and some episodes of Tales From the Darkside. None of them are scary though. For me the scariest television shows are shows like America's Most Wanted and others like it.

I always thought Night Gallery was scary when I was younger, especially the episode A Question of Fear. Not really because of outright scariness, but because of the psychological aspects.
Now, none are really so scary. Most that have already been mentioned have had their moments...Tales from the Darkside, Twilight Zone, and one not yet mentioned, Masters of Horror. Sometimes they delve into darker areas of human nature but most of the time they don't begin to touch the horrors of real life. |
NIGHT GALLERY with Vincent Price.
Does anyone remember this? It scared the hell out of me. Feet and hands moving across the floor! Great stuff.
|
I remember that one. It was The Return of the Sorcerer. It is based on a story by the same name written by Clark Ashton Smith.
The other episode Vincent Price was in, Class of 99 was...not really anything memorable, except Brandon deWilde shooting Randolph Mantooth for being nonconformist I guess you could say. I hate to admit it but I kept thinking "Shane! Come back Shane!" :p The first episode The Dead Man was a really good episode. When the doctor's wife goes running to the cemetary to "awaken" her hypnotized lover I did get cold chills. The creepy atmosphere of Algernon Blackwood's The Doll was captured very nicely in the Night Gallery's adaptation. Big Surprise was always a favorite. Probably because it is written by Richard Matheson, a genius in his chosen field. Pickman's Model and Cool Air, neither were as faithful as I might have liked to Lovecraft but both told a nice morbid little tale. Green Fingers stayed with me for years. It is usually one of the first I think of when Night Gallery is mentioned. Lindemann's Catch was another. That whole mermaid thing was creepy. Stop Killing me is just really funny...if you have a slightly dark sense of humour. I'll Never Leave You--Ever is the only episode I can think of that is somewhat scary and not just creepy. |
Some of my favourite "scary" TV shows:
Night Gallery Hammer House of Horrors Night Stalker (telemovies and series) Twilight Zone The Outer Limits Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected (although I recently saw an episode that I remember from when I was young, and it hasn't aged well). |
The original Outer Limits.
The original OUTER LIMITS was always cool; you got a monster every episode; more than a few scared me ,when I was young. However, the newer OUTER LIMITS also had some very creepy moments. Yes, there was always the obligatory tits and ass, but some of the episodes were almost as good as the original series. Here in central OHIO there was a horror movie host named DR. Creep. He would often show an episode of the original OUTER LIMITS with a classic movie like ATTACT OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE! He was often obviously very buzzed and just the coolest thing a 13 year old could ever hope for. Back on topic, THE OUTER LIMITS from the 60's often scared the crap out of me!

There was something I read once about the original Outer Limits. An episode was not allowed to air because the alien looked too realistic, or something of that nature. I believe Stephen King told the story in Danse Macabre. Anyone know about this? I'd really like to see this episode if this is true. I'm sure the interpretation of a 'realistic' looking alien have changed alot in 45 years.

A haunting on Discovery Channel was kinda scary, not when I watched some of the episodes, but when I thought about them later!! I was glad it came on during the day, I tried to watch one episode one night before going to sleep( we have tivo) and I couldn't get to sleep afterward to save my ass!! My hubby was overseas, he probably would have scared the crap out of me if he were home anyway, worst than the show ever could, ha ha!! Happy Slashing All !!
