Underrated/Overrated

Okay, I'm going to hold off on most of my own input for awhile as I'm still churning over exactly which films I would put under each of these categories, but I'm curious to see what you guys consider to be the most underrated and the most overrated films of all time, and why.

Surely there are films which we have all waited so long to see, and heard so much about, and were sorely dissapointed when we finally got to watch them.

For instance, I find The Terminator to be wildly overrated. I find it horribly out-dated, cheezy as all get-up, and just plain boring. I also find myself completely isolated in thsi opinion as it seems that every other person, organization, etc. that I've ever run across thinks it is one of the most essential films out there.

Let's hear some more.

Angra 08-22-2008 12:59 PM

That subject is taboo here.

You say Terminator is overated because it is dated?

I find that it is dated to be part of its briliance , It had that cold cyber 80's feel, probably one of my faveorite futureistic eras of movies.

OK.

I think that Lord of the Rings is far over rated, it is a fine film, but really, it is only a part of a story and holds no ground by itself.

Sure it had some nice effects but that is not enough. I'd rather waste my time reading the book or watching Braindead.

An underated film I love is Fingers, made in 78 with a young Kietel, well as far` as his carrer goes, it crosses over the gangstar artist genre in a brilliant way I have never seen replicated.

Lord of the Rings

fortunato 08-22-2008 01:37 PM

Oh yes indeed.

The hilarious LOTR vs. Star Wars discussion in "Clerks 2" comes to mind. :p

Randal Graves: All right, look, there's only one "Return," okay, and it ain't "of the King," it's "of the Jedi."
Hobbit Lover: Oh, Star Wars geek.
Randal Graves: Oh, I'm the geek? Look at you two whipping out your preciouses.
Elias: You'll have to excuse him, he's not "down" with the trilogy.
Randal Graves: Oh, what the fuck happened to this world? There's only one trilogy, you fucking morons.
Hobbit Lover: You know what, maybe we should start calling your friend Padme, because he loves Manakin Skywalker so much, right?
[in robot voice]
Hobbit Lover: Danger danger, my name is Anakin. My shitty acting is ruining saga.
Elias: [chucking] Yea-Yeah, you're crazy, Jar-Jar.
Randal Graves: Oh, I'm crazy? Those fuckin' hobbit movies were boring as hell. All it was, was a bunch of people walking, three movies of people walking to a fucking volcano.

Randal Graves: [describing the Lord of the Rings Trilogy] Here's the first movie.
[walks a few steps, staring blankly]
Randal Graves: And here's the second movie.
[walks a few steps again, pretends to trip]
Hobbit Lover: He is way off, loser.
Randal Graves: You ready for the third movie?
[walks yet again, stops, pretends to throw the ring into the volcano. Shrugs his shoulders and turns around]

Randal Graves: And what's with that gay fucking look, I thought Sam was going to saunter over Frodo and suck his fucking cock. Now that would have been an Academy Award worthy ending.
Hobbit Lover: Hey faggot, they're not gay! They're hobbits!
Randal Graves: And then after the Frodo and Sam suckfest, just before the credits roll, Sam straight up fucking bricks in Frodo's mouth.

Damn, i wish i had the whole dialogue..

Reverse for me- I like Donnie Darko, but I hate The Boondock Saints.

Angra 08-22-2008 04:04 PM

I like neither of them.

Saints much less than Darko tho.

Vodstok 08-22-2008 04:15 PM

havent seen boondock saints, but s0 far, i like all of those movies. perhaps they are overrated, but they are entertaining

i think italian horror as a genre is overrated, and i think quentin tarantino is horribly overrated, but i dislike form over function, so forgive me.

La Chat Noire 08-22-2008 04:57 PM

I can't believe so many people hate The Boondock Saints. Any movie that has hot Irish men with guns wins me over.

But I always kind of felt The Exorcist was a highly overrated movie. The book was so much better.

Noah 08-22-2008 05:17 PM

LOTR, POTC and the Harry Potter movies all suck giant amounts of enlarged, hairy, sweaty, motherfucking testicles.

I would also like to add 300, and Sin City to this list.

I didnt mind Donnie Darko..i had some trouble undestranding it, and I do think it falls under the over rated category, but i wouldnt say I disliked it either.
Now Boondock Saints..thats another story.

massacre man 08-22-2008 05:29 PM

I don't believe in either term.

Because really, why should you get to say someone's opinion of a film is wrong? If you didn't like a movie cool, but don't assume the people that do like it are incapable of independent thought.

I've seen it, I won it, i like it, but beyond being interesting, it was just okay., there was no actual plot, no central story (dont give me the briefcase bullshit, that was a red herring and there is no resolution to that). it was a series of unresolved vignettes, which makes it a novelty.

By and large, i cant stand what he makes.

all we're doing here is giving our opinions.
the point isn't to attack someone else's opinion(s). the point is that it can be interesting to learn what movies people do find overrated or underrated.
who knows, you might even be able to gain a new outlook on a movie because of someone else's argument, or learn about a movie that you didn't know about before.

anyone planning on insulting someone else because of their appreciation or lack of for a certain movie shouldn't be posting in this thread.
that happens in enough threads as it is.

neverending 08-22-2008 07:00 PM

I'm the same on LOTR being over-rated. IMO it should be renamed Peter Jackson's LOTR because it sure ain't Tolkien's. I'm very interested to see del Toro's vision of Tolkien.

Over-rated for me are most John Carpenter's movies. A lot of them are just so cheesey and have awful scripts. I don't get why he is so diefied by younger horror fans.

Also every Freddy, Jason & Michael Myers sequel.

Have I alienated everyone yet?

I'm also with Alky on Terminator.

As for under-rated- Peter Lorre. One of the greatest actors ever and he got voted down here in the first round of horror actors tournament.

Also a film I loved when it came out, that has never been released on video or dvd, and was universally panned: Swashbuckler. IMO a wonderful pirate adventure with Robert Shaw, Beau Bridges, Geoffrey Holder, James Earl Jones, Guenevieve Bujold, Anjelica Huston, Avery Schrieber & Peter Boyle.

i've always wanted to see that.
you just reminded me.
i'm netflix-queuing it now.

neverending 08-22-2008 07:22 PM

Wow- it's been released?

Vodstok 08-22-2008 07:24 PM

I always loved Virtuosity, which seems to be almost universally forgotten. The acting was a bit over the top, but the basic concept behind it was brilliant.

Team America World Police also doesnt seem to get its just desserts. I find Parker and Stone to be unbelievably insightful, and if you pay attention, they are vulgar for vulgarity's sake only when the comic timing is perfect. the first time i saw the puking in the alley scene. i almost threw up myself because i was laughing so hard i could hardly breathe.

_____V_____ 08-22-2008 07:49 PM

*dropping a bombshell*

Most overrated - The Shining.

I know what I am saying, and hear me out. The first time I saw it (on VHS many years back), it scared me shitless.

I bought the DVD much later and have given it 2-3 spins since then.

The movie looks very dated (read the book meanwhile), and is largely deviant from the source.

And I didn't find Nicholson the least bit scary. Not even the twins either.

Granted, Kubrick did an awesome job with the background score and the setting, but the movie overall didnt have that effect on me than it had when I was a kid.

Guess I outgrew it, or maybe the movie doesnt stand the test of time. But the last time I was watching it, I felt bored and had to shut it off midway.

Now, don't flame me guys.

illdojo 08-22-2008 09:27 PM

For me it's Gone With The Wind. This film was boring when I was a kid and I tried to watch it again recently.....and it's still a snore-fest.

yeah Carpenters movies are chessy, that is why they are great, it is that he does cheesiness so well.

try walking a round at night to his soundtracks on headphones....

ferretchucker 08-23-2008 06:31 AM

2001: A Space Oddessy

What a load of crap! That is my no. 1 least favourite film of all time. All of that artsy fartsy crap makes me sick to my arse!

And this one's for you MD

TITANIC

I think Alien3 is underrated. I found it enjoyable, it kept the claustraphobic theme of the original and though the effects were lacking, I thought the way it took it in a new direction and had such an anticlimax made it something new and exciting as well as reminding us of the original.

The soundtracks are great- many of them better than the movies.

Arrrgghhhhhhh!

-------------------------------

I'm gonna get it for this one, but I thought The Abyss was dreadful. I'm willing to sit through a long movie any day of the week, but when the payoff is as cheezy and superficial as this one, I get angry. It just seems like an hour could have been cut off of it and the movie would seem a lot less pretentious.

Yet, he never gets mentioned.

Just look at all our "Best actors" threads.

Was he even in the "Actors tournament"? I don't think so.

Your underrated/overrated list contradicts itself!
